Taking a little break...

Hey guys and gals I am going to be taking somewhat of a break from here and partially reefing too. I am bummed still about hydroids, monti eating nudis and zoa eating nudis as well. I am so bummed about watching piece after piece of coral either die or struggle along to survive. I need to do some major maintenace and hopefully get these things under controll especially before summer. I will be around but probably not real visable. I want to get a RK lite to help out and it will likely be my last purchase for awhile.

I am just overwhelmed with planting coming up and the normal gardening/sumer stuff and my probs w/ my aquarium right now. So I wont be completing the growout contest and nano contest likely. Every one have a great time and good luck reefing. See you around

Has anyone heard of dipping corals in flatworm exit? So it wouldnt trash the biological stuff in there? I am pretty certain the aquarium couldnt take being dosed right now.

Good luck fixing your tank and getting it back up and running in proper fashion! I bought one of those butane pencil torches from Home Depot with a very fine flame and it works great for burning off hydroids. You may want to consider removing your problem rocks, burning off the hydroids and cooking the live rock in a dark room with a heater and powerhead for a couple of months. It will really clean out the rock, the bad stuff will die and you can start anew with good rock at least. Don't know much about the flatworm stuff, sorry.

I have done the flatworm exit and it will kill your nudi problem, but it needs to be repeated to kill all of the young as they hatch out. Dipping won't end your problem you will miss a couple and they will start it all over again. If you do use the exit be ready to do lots of water changes, when you kill nudies they release toxins and that will start a different problem or 2 or 3.
I know because I went through this about 1 1/2 years ago and in time you can beat it.
But as far as hydroids just keep removing as many as you can. I just scrape them off and syphon them out. After time it is just a part of the tank maintenance and isn't a problem.
