I also simulate a 'Hurricane' every 4th or 5th water change. I do this by holding a power head and moving it around the tank blasting the rocks of their holes and the nooks and crannies. I then do a 10-15 gallon water change.
but in a smaller tank wouldnt that screw the waterparams?

It could, but by doing a good water change right after should be fine. There is no reason to allow that much build up, ever. It will take a few days and water changes to get on top of it, but once you do just maintain!

Thats how I roll, on both tanks. Once a week I blast my overflows too, so the detritus goes down to the skimmer rather than just mounding up.
