    Default jolson10450's photography thread

Well a few weeks ago i picked up a Nikon D70s from bryan and got a macro lens for it which is a sigma 50mm f2.8 macro lens so i want to start practicing and logging some of my photography that way i can see how much i improve over time. there are no watermarks on these currently but maybe as i start getting better at it i will start adding one. More will be added as time goes on, currently waiting on my tripod so i can try to dial in what settings on the camera i like best.

here are a few shots i have recently taken:

    thanks!

Photography is new to me 1 month ago, i have always had a point and shoot or camera phone so this is a huge learning curve for me, i know exactly what i want to do with my photos now i just need to figure out what settings to tweak to make it look good, f. stop aperature and ISO and stuff is all new to me. thanks to russ (emureef) and bryan (skyhigh) for helping me some with these but i am sure as i go on i will pick it up more, it just takes time and getting to know my camera. as you can see i can get some good focus out of the camera, i am pretty shakey because i am not used to taking a photo with a camera so big so i got to get used to that, i want a bigger depth of field (i think) so my pictures look more in focus all the way around. it will just take some time for me to learn it all but until then i will just keep snapping pictures and hoping they turn out good!

Are you taking these pics under LED?? I have a POS point n shoot and can't get a decent pic of my tank to save my arse. As a result, I have not posted any pics in my tank thread in what seems like forever. Kind of a bummer to watch my tank evolve but have no photographic history. I've been to busy burning up cash on the tank that I have neglected the inevitable camera purchase!

pictures 2,3,5 are under t5's in my main tank and the rest are under my leds. it is very hard for me to take them under my leds because i only have a 3 light system (2 blue 1 white) and any frag that shadows the white there is just a spot of blue that makes the photo look like complete crap. that is the issue i see with LEDS, since they do not create ambiant light like t5's and MH's if there is anything in the way of a certain LED all others will shine in that shadow and black out some of the light so you could end up with just blue and just white spots all over the tank.

i have overcome this by adding a HOB filter on the tank to throw a ripple in the water suface to make a shimmering effect, it makes the tank look cool and it helps stir the LED light up so it is not so noticeable.

i thought the same way you did though about my tank and finally i sucked it up and sold a bunch of frags and was able to get enough money to get me a camera to take some tank pictures, so far the only plans for this camera is to take pictures of my tank. it has a short macro lens that is only good up to 5ft on it so it is hard to get a normal person in focus on this camera until i get a new lens at least. i suggest you buy one! buy a nice used one first but do some research on it before you buy, then as you learn and get used to all the setting you can eventually get a really nice one. i am just using this as a learner one and i know eventually sometime down the road i will buy another, i just want to know everything about these cameras before i take that step.
