Not sure if it's accurate or not, but I've referred to these as sea squirts -- I have some in my tank. They are pretty, and as far as I know, harmless.

If he's continuing to eat and is healthy, i wouldn't worry too much about it. I see molts all the time in my tank...I'm amazed at how quickly they grow!
