    Default Giant Mushroom predator

Our giant mushroom has consumed 2 cardinal fish and a cleaner shrimp. Can any thing be done to stop the carnage?

    Please Help.

Silly question time, just how big is a 'giant' shroom? Just regular ol' variety of shrooms? We've got some that open to be 5" across or so, but I don't *think* they've eaten anyone but I would guess they could snatch a chromis if they very wanted to.

It opens to 6 or 7 inches and closes into a tight ball. After killing the fish or shrimp it expels the body enveloped in a mucus cocoon. It has short tentacles or protrusions on the inside of the cup like surface and what looks like a mouth in the center. We have had it for almost 1 year, but it is only within the last month or so that it has killed anything.

If it's began a taste for tank critters... find it a new home. I'll bet you're speaking of the elephant ears, right? They're giant shrooms... BTW, they're very closely related to anemones. See the relation??? Sorry for the losses.

This sounds unbelievable, but I do believe you. I think it's time that mushroom finds a different type of home if it's eating your fish. I want to see pictures of this type of mushroom. I wonder if I have any? It sure is something we should all check on if we have mushrooms we've received in trades and such. Elephant ear huh? I think I'll go do a search on that one. Very interesting!

Just found a great picture on wetwebmedia. See the photo with the clown fish at http://www.wetwebmedia.com/mushroomidfaqs.htm .
I believe it is a amplexidiscus.

Yep, that is an elephant ear. Is it easily removed? Probably could trade it to some one or the LFS.
