So, sponges....who thinks they are all good for your tank? Has anyone ever known of a sponge to be a nuisance? In fact, there are certain sponges that can irritate your zoas and even choke them off and kill them. There is a local guy with a really cool tank. He has a gorgeous colony of zoas but then you get close and realize that the colony is sharing space with a green sponge. This sponge is bright green and is growing over the zoas and choking some of them.
I recently bought a frag of some zoas which had a yellow sponge growing on it. The sponge was growing in tube-like protrusions actually stinging my zoas. Once I removed the sponge, the colony opened an the polyps were much happier.
Don't always think that just because you have a sponge, it's good. I would reccommend removing any sponges growing on your corals unless you are 100% sure they will not take over the coral or produce a biological agent to attack.
Anyone have any stories of nuisance sponges?
