Interesting chart Jim. It's strange because I have green bay packers and I started with 4 polyps and now I have over 40 in about 5 mos. My lunars are growing very slowly and they have finally started to put out new polyps. However, this topic has definitely morphed. lol.
I have brought back dry rock from Hawaii, in the states literature, there can be no live organisms on the rock. Now thats not CITES, but the state of Hawaii has some of the most restrictive measures out there. Definately no coral or harvested live rock (you know with critters). I showed the inspectors my dry rock at the airport and it was no problem.
Lets not forget all the single or double polyps that melted in the contest as well.....there were many. Most of the more experienced reefers, or the ones with well taken care of tanks went anywhere in this contest. Many many droped out and had complete failure.
In my experience- polyps, somtimes depending on a few specific types, do very poorely when fragged too small. I have found that a 5 polyp frag minimum is universally best for the welfare of any polyp frag. I have been fragging a loooong time.....and seen the concequences and benefits of both sides.
It is very obvious that the larger the frag, the better the frag did, looking back at the growout contest.
Where are you getting "very obvious that the larger the frag, the better the frag did" from? I don't see this trend in the chart I posted. The largest frag being 5 polyps performed second to last with the two contestants that finished the contest. The smallest (1 polyp) performed in the middle of the pack.
It is true we had a lot of folks not finish. Many folks purchased the packs because they were a good deal with no intention of doing the contest. Some decided the regular thread updates were too much work. And, I'm sure some frags were lost and they decided to bail on the contest. With no data to support the fate of the other frags, I don't think we can draw any true conclusions from those.
It would be an interesting experiment to compare a group of reefers starting out with different sized colony/frags and see how they do...my guess is for some a larger size colony would only mean it takes longer to lose all the polyps. Starting with a colony does not guarantee success.
Jim- How many people is that chart based on?
Two...the only two that finished the contest.
The results that the chart are showing really don't depict much since it was only two people. It doesn't say either way whether a frag grows better from 5 or 1 polyp because the results are only from those 2 people. Realistically, I think (I am not 100% sure bc I took stats a long time ago) but for your results to show a true trend, you must have at least 30 people (either 30 or 20...I can't remember exactly) for your results to be accurate. The more ppl you have the more accurate your results will be and they will more clearly depict a trend.
Correct...It does not show a trend of "larger the frag, the better the frag did" .
Right, it doesn't really prove anything. Just what the two people had as results.
