Finally! I seem to be getting a hold on the diatoms. Coraline is popping up all over the rock. All corals look awesome today :) My angel is doing great also. Not nipping at the corals at all~knock on wood. Now if I can stop my mag350 from blowing bubbles I'll be able to sit quietly and not fret :)
I did add a surface skimmer and wow! What a difference. Within 1 minute the surface was totally clear. I've got it hooked up to the mag350.

Heard you had some zoas melt......
Still keeping up on this tank like you were the 8 gallon? If so, with the addition of the fuge and skimmer, I would feed more- like a couple times a day. Might have better luck. I have found polyps do best in very clean tanks that still have lotts of food, readily available.
MizTanks
05-22-2011, 02:27 AM
Yeah one of my new frags melted away except for one large polyp-and it's doing great-go figure :)
As for feeding-with the new angel I'm up to 3x a day-def wanna keep her happy :) 2 types of reef nutrition flakes and 1 Rods blend.
Still anal about maintenance-just doing wc's less frequently-bout every 10 days.

Got up this morning to clean glass! No dusting of diatoms. What did I do? No fuge light and no lunar lights. Total blackout. So I've come to the conclusion that my fuge light is running to long 10-12hrs a night, lunars 10. Remedy seems to be lessen fuge lighting to 8hrs to start and lunar's to 8hrs also. This little fuge light not only gets very very hot it also may be to much for my little fuge. 24w mean's 8w per gallon, the fuge is only 3g. I'll be looking for a lesser light fixture.
Aside from all that, my tank is doing great. Had to bring in a bunch of cheato to the lfs. Haven't lost anything but a few zoa polyps :) Fish are doing good also. Still no coral nipping from the angel, guess I got lucky :)

I've decided to switch things up a bit. I'm going to remove all cheato from the fuge. Instead I'm going to be running some LR rubble and Tom Weiss phosphate + silicate magnet. It absorbs these 2 and holds em. No purging! If it works as I think it will, I'll continue to use it as a treatment for my makeup water, before adding salt.
After much research and good conversation it's been proven to me that although cheato is a fine algae that will absorb no3 and po4, it doesn't consume it. It can only absorb so much and then it will begin leaching, putting it right back into my tank. Besides it's become a big PITA for me and I would just as soon not use it. Cheato anyone? As far as it controlling ph, IMO that would be hard to prove as ph changes throughout the day.
I'm still dosing 2 part. So far so good. At least that's what my corals are telling me. Looking awesome! Surprisingly enough I'm getting good growth out of all my zoa's. For me, this is a miracle. :)

Just tested water parameters=ca 420~kh=9~ph=8.2 and sg=1.025.
Having removed all but a little bunch of cheato it appears that may have been the cause for my diatoms. I didn't cull it enough and guess it expelled the po4 right back into the tank. I removed the cheato 2 days ago and I'm already seeing the diatoms receding. Yahoo!
My Digitfera Acro still refuses to totally color up. It's like half green and half brown. The digitfera show's very little polyp extension whether it be day or night.
The Turaki is more of a purple and wow do her polyps come out when it's totally dark. Against all info I've read about this acro, with it needing low to medium flow. She sure likes to be blowing around, a lot.
My Tonga shrooms have close to doubled their size. My acan has 2 new heads, giving me a total of 6. My little Fungia eats like a pig and I actually got it on video. Way cool to watch. Got 4 heads on my Blasto Merletti, just gotta find a way to get it off the plug and onto the rock. Maxi Mini's are both 3+ inches. That's about it for now :)

Where did you read that Cheato leaches Nitrates or Phosphates? The key to Cheato (or any Algea used for nutrient control) is to periodically harvest it, thereby removing all the nuisance nutrients bound within the algae. The only way I'm aware of it leaching anything would be if it were to die and be allowed to decompose in the tank.
The improvements you've seen since removing some of your Chaeto were likely coincidental and not related to the Cheato unless it was dying or was so dense that it was trapping detritus. Personally, if you have Cheato growing, I'd strongly suggest you keep it over any Weiss chemical product. With the Cheato you have PROOF that it works :)
As for the positive pH impact - I can assure you it's real. During photosynthesis, plants (algae) take up CO2 causing an increase in pH. Sufficient photosynthesis occurring on a reverse lighting schedule will help increase pH in support of the diurnal swings. This provides pH support overnight while respiration is occurring within your main tank resulting in the release of CO2 and lowering of pH levels.
MizTanks
06-03-2011, 12:14 AM
You said exactly what I meant- Either way it was all my cheatos fault. From now on I won't let it take control of me but me of it-lol
Nobody told me that the cheato leaches. I came up with that one on my own :) pretty good one right-lol. Let's hope no one was listening to me.
Again I get some much need info from you CSQ. I'm so happy you don't charge for it. :)

My Tail Spot Blenny isn't doing so good. I think she picked something up from my Angel. About a week after I bought the Angel she was showing signs of ICH. However within a couple of days she was completely clean
Now my Blenny is looking not so good. She's got something but it only sort of looks like ICH. She was scraping on the rock, yet she was still eating. Well she hasn't eaten this morning, nor is she moving around much. Actually she's only gone from one spot to another. I'm afraid she's going to die.....

I haven't been feeling well of late. Diabetes has reared it's ugliness. Today I felt a little better and so I made my way to the LFS. Totally focused on getting a few items I need for the health of my tank and corals. Lets see...I bought a small package of brine shrimp and.....what the heck is that in my bag....yup a pencil urchin. Talk about an impulse buy or what. I know nothing about them except, one does not belong in my tank. I hate it when I do this. Even though it's happened only twice before, I still hate it. By having to take it back I've added so much more stress on the animal. I just wanted to selfishly make myself feel better......
Yes I'll be taking it back to the LFS, even though that environment is less then where it's at now :(
Tank is doing good.

Well If I didn't care about my FF eating and hiding, which she does anyways with or without the angel, I'd keep her. She's really not doing any damage to my corals. Just nips at my lil acan, of which I only have one. And when she nips it, it stays closed up for a couple of days.
I'm thinking about just sticking with a bunch of nano fishes. Cardinals~clown gobies even that Chalk bass you mentioned....who knows?

That is a Tangaroa Goby/Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp. I've had both for almost 2yrs. This goby is the shrimps 2nd fish. The first was a yellow rose prawn goby who jumped to her death via the pump house in my biocube.

Thank you everyone! Jim your right about it coming along great for a newer tank. Hadn't thought of it that way. As I'm writing this I'm looking at the amount of coraline growth on the LR and it's amazing how much of it there is. Funny thing though, there's none on the tank walls at all.
I broke my lil surface skimmer (which was working great) and it's hard looking at the water with that terrible film on it. Wish I knew the cause. No matter how much agitation I add it doesn't go away.
Other then that this tank is doing wonderfully. I keep up on all the parameters. Feed sparingly. Got a great clean up crew. Soon to have an ro/di unit and a gfo reactor. Now I'll just watch her grow....

is your new tanl drilled ?? Does it have an overflow box? The over flow and dorso or even jost a drain bulkhead after the the overflow skimms the film and top waste which is why these systems do not have the film you are experienceing. Without a method of skimming such as a skim bucket you will still have the film, sorry. But the new tank is looking great!!

Well my little bleached out Maxi Mini has moved off her rock and into a hole :( will she come out?
Haven't seen my firefish in a couple of days now...dumb fish...causes me to much worry...it's like having a teenage run-a-way....
I do believe I've found the answer to keeping my corals happy and thriving...quit changing the water so much. I was doing weekly wc and my zoa's refused to thrive. My acros were lacking in color and polyp expansion was minimal. However since I started dosing 2 part at 7.5ml daily and wc monthly. All my corals are thriving!! All zoa's are producing 1-2 polyps weekly and the polyp expansion and color of my acros have bloomed! Needless to say all my LPS's are doing wonderfully. Can't believe the growth on my HS :)
All is awesome in my tank...oh and I'm getting a new fish...Midas Blenny!

So today I'm going to get off my behind and add a piece of extension tubing to my intake pump...lowering it so I can fully utilize the pre-skimmer box...this will enable me to drop the water level some so the pump is pulling water from the surface and therefore clearing up the scum...silly me just hates getting her hands wet and making a mess :)
All is well with my tank. Still waiting on the tap adapter to get here so I can hook up my ro/di unit...first water change coming up with good clean phosphate free water :)
It's way cool seeing my Acros now covering the plugs they came on...great growth....zoa polyps are increasing big time. All is well with my tank :)

If you get tired of waiting for the tap adapter, most Ace hardwares carry them, probably even home depot... Just look for ice maker fittings... I got a spare one from menards, and another from Ace...

For all who read this..here's a great big ole DON'T DO for ya's. My salinity was low so what do I do? I take a glass, pour some salt about half way and fill the rest with water. Mix a little, pour into my fuge, add a little more water to glass, mix a little pour into fuge. I do this 3-4 times. All the while thinking that it will all mix slowly in the fuge. NOT!
Yup you guessed it. All the salt just sat in the bottom of my fuge and....killed every pod, bristle worm and hey whaddya know it even killed the flat worms. In stead of my cheato being nice like a brillo it is now nice and stringy, an just last week I had to cut it in half cause it grows soooo fast. UGH!!!
I am now making up some new water. Will drain the fuge of all the lil dead critters :( Anyone got an idea if this may have gone all the way down through the sand bed? Anything else ya'll can think of that I should do? DT parameters are fine believe it or not :)
What a total dumb *** I am!!!

Well you live and learn. At least it sounds like you go it under control before it messed with your DT, do you have a way to isolate your fuge from the rest of your system?

I think if you just change the water and clean out the extra salt you should be fine, keep and eye on the salinity for the next few days though
binford4000
08-22-2011, 02:05 PM
I would siphon the dead bugs out after you isolate the dt from the fuge.Rember theirs inportant bactaria in your fuge so I wouldn't recomend draining it completly either.Just add RO tell you get it at the same salinty as your dt. let it sit for awhile and double check it before you reconect it to your dt.There's lots of pods in dt so you'll have pods again soon and your fuge will rcover better if don't remove all the bactaria. As for the cheato dying,it's probably going to rcover as well,it's just alittle fried from the acid of the salt.Make sure you check your PH and alk.You might have to use some buffer to get things at safe level.Good luck

08-24-2011, 04:02 PM
Well that was a **** of a job wew! Totally drained my aquafuge. Totally sucked out all the badness. Threw away the chaeto even though it was still really green, the texture was more like string then brillo. That can't be good :)
Going to do some research on what else can go into a fuge besides chaeto and LR rubble. Last night I was thinking about how without the use of chaeto or a place to put a skimmer, this little fuge is not much more then a canister filter. So what to do with it?? Bio-pellets? GFO? LR rubble? Palys, shrooms? Hmmmm?

What I did was make a gallon (small tank I got) of sw at 1.025 which is were I keep my level in my tank. I'm using the new top off water to raise my salinity gradually. Once I reach my desired level of 1.025 (within a couple 2-3 days) I'll go back to using clean ro/di for top offs.

I'm not saying they don't look nice. Just saying they are not purple! They are a dirty pink and I don't like anything pink. I own nothing pink. So here I am with a pink coral in my tank that I paid good money for. I can either keep looking at it an go UGH or get rid of it. It's frustrating that light makes the color they are sold under and if you don't have those lights then you don't get that color. NO I'm not bashing any one seller here, just stating a fact. Actually to be honest? It's not only frustrating but I'm just freaking sick of it! Nothing I buy is ever going to look like it does in the pictures, just because of this FACT! Nobody ever talks about it. Would be wonderful if someone would do something like...here's what they look like under MH AND T5. But that would be to much like right. Or how bout leaving the photoshop out of the whole equation? No I'm not ignorant about marketing. But there are many sides to a coral, why show just one? There's a market out here for MH corals. Why not one for t5's an CF's? We already see them being sold under LEDs. I could rant all day on this subject....

Not to be the devils advocate, but in some listings I have seen some that list the lighting the pictures were taken in. Unfortunately this is the exception and not the rule.
This is one of the reasons I prefer to buy corals at the swaps and from local reefers. That way you only buy what you like.
MizTanks
08-26-2011, 11:11 AM
2pairs if they had a swap within 3hrs from me I'd never buy coral online again unless it was from a private seller. I try to get peoples here at CR to ship! Some do, most wont. My loss :( A few reefers here have gotten a *care* package together for me and will be shipping it soon, (I'm so grateful they don't even know) There is NO where for me to buy corals U.P. here. I could order them from our LFS and believe me I would love to. I really like this store but...by the time he factors in shipping and his profit, an $7.00 fish will cost me $21.00+tax and that's picking up the fish before they put it in a tank. If the fish makes it into the tank before I can pick it up, well the price is another $7.00+tax. My last 2 fish I ordered? One arrived dead and the other looked terrible, very skinny :( I've seen the bags sit in the tanks for hours, yes I mean hours!
As for buying coral. Our LFS uses 2 wholesalers. (remain nameless) By the time they reach U.P. here they are in dire straights. Then if you can get to them before the (reefer employees) get to them you may have a choice of something kind a nice. I have placed orders several times via our LFS and have received 2 out of about 10. Usually the seller didn't have what was on the list or the order never got placed. So the moral here is...I'm totally on a rant today :smash: My jeeps broke down and I've got to much time to spend looking at my tank  wondering what else I can put into it...which only makes the subject worse :stars:

I am sorry for your frustration Jamie! :( makes me sad. I really don't know what you are going through cause I myself have never bought anything without seeing it first. I do know, not about duncans, but acros and zoas look great once they have had time to acclimate to your tank and lights. Time like months w/o being moved. Zoas change and look good but different in my tank after a couple months, sometimes better them when I bought them. Acros always look best in very low trats/phosp. systems which most stores have but most of us don't.
Photoshop isn't always the problem either. An acro will look awesome and then it gets bagged tagged and shipped and it's going to look ****ed till it gets use to it's new tank. Which if you read more then 0 phosphates on an API test may not ever happen. I am battling phosphates right now and sensitive stuff looks like crap.
Sorry for the frustration friend :(

Jamie, the one thing I have noticed as far as losing color under the T5s vs MH is that you still may get the color you desire but it will take a few months for you to get it. Not sure about Duncans but I know I have bought some z's & p's where the color was bland and after a few months, it finally colored up to what the original pic showed it to be.

THANKS
The way you raise your salinity is top off with saltwater. Say you have 1/2g per day evaporation, instead of adding RO water as you normally would, add salt water. This will increase it slowly. You can also do a water change and make that salinity higher than what your tank is. If you're at 1.023 and want it at 1.026, I personally would make my water 1.028-1.030 on a 10% wc. Might take several weeks to do it this way though....which is why the top off is faster/easier imo.

Having received the wrong order from ReefCleaners (a bunch of snails) I took them to our LFS for credit. I've been watching this Flame Scallop for at least 4 months. In a 20g with a florescent bulb. That's it, and it's still alive? I did some research back when I was running cf's on my 8g and knew that wasn't good enough for it. But now I have t5ho's. Well come to find out light isn't really a major issue for these little guys. So along with a Peppermint Shrimp I brought it home. To say that after just an hour in my tank, that this is one of the coolest creatures I've had in my tank is an understatement. At first I set it on the SB and for the last hour I've been watching it climb the rocks!! Fully open and I swear it's smiling. It looks so much happier now that it's in my tank :)
At the LFS is was just sitting in a corner of the tank on the SB. I feel like I saved a Scallop today :jester: Taken with a flash as the lunars are running.

Beautiful Flame, a few years ago before I really knew what I was doing with SW I bought an electric flame with the bio-lume, it was awesome in the store but as soon as I put it in my tank it jetted in to behind my rock and I never saw it again . That's awesome it's out in the open and looking very happy, I'm sure you'll be able to keep it healthy.

I think he is smiling! My guy still looks the same, happy and healthy. He may find his way to one place and just chill there always, and that is really ok. Mine moved a lot the first couple days now he is settled up agents the glass in the back. Not sure exactly what they eat... No one is... But they are filter feeders, so my theory is they possession themselves where they get the best flow of food and chill there. Good luck Miz! You do have a pretty "blue thumb" :)

Well I'm waiting on my chaeto/pods so I can reseed my lil fuge soooo-a good friend of my son's wanted to try his hand at a reef tank. It's a 20g long. I gave him 10lbs of dry Pukani, 20lbs of Reef Crystals, a hydrometer and a 50w heater to start him out with. He added 20lbs of live sand and is running a 30" Coralife t5 10k and atenic. Just this past weekend he came to pick up the 20gs of ro/di I made for him and I gave him a very nice size rock 2+yrs old of yellow star polyps, 3 quarter size Superman shrooms, a larger Tonga shroom and a quarter size frag of chalice (can't remember the name of it) never felt better being a reefer!!! Loved giving these things away to him :)

My heart is sick :( my angel died :shake-head: I did everything right I know I did. I removed the rock from my tank and after that it only took me a couple of minutes to net her. After about 15 minutes in the bag she just died. I've never never had this happen to a fish before. I'm just sick over it..she didn't deserve this to happen to her. I feel terrible....:angelsad: yes I cried...

Having found and read this great article A Close-up Look at Tridacna crocea by James Fatherree - Reefkeeping.com (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-10/jf/index.php) I am going with my first mind and placement with my clam. I've also contacted The Alternative Reef in reference to one of their clam holders :) So for now she is up top on the LR about 8" from the water surface. If she were to fall it'll be a very short one. Just knowing she's getting the proper amount of light, short of MH makes me feel much better about getting her.

Well the clam holder is out-I'm told although they're only $2 it would cost them $10 to ship it. WTH? I'm only 1 less customer right.

The problem is, someone has to procure packaging, take time to pack it, pay the transactional fees, etc. I can see how selling $2 items could put you out of business if you didn't charge enough to cover the expense of shipping. Where did you look for it? I bet there are several sponsors that carry Alternative Reefs products...just find one that has a few other things you need to make it worthwhile. :)

Just add a few other items to the package to make the $10 shipping worth it. Thats what I do. You can probly find a bunch of cheap usable stuff to add to your order, and still maintain the $10 shipping, and get a pretty good package sent for cheap.
One of the tricks of the trade!

you need to get a top like the ones jim has. Sorry to hear about your fish. I had a pair of blue flasher wrasses that are living in the basement while I set up the 120.(no top on the 100g rubbermaid) They would eat from my hand they are so tame. They have been down there 2 months, and the other day just out of no where one jumped. I came home to it dried up on the floor. Who knows why they do it. Just gotta lock them in for their own sake. I mean they are eating out of my hand, no fear of the other fish, life is good right?

Well today I decided to remove the skimmer from the fuge. It's been a bigger pita then anything. Didn't realize how much noise it was making until my sis woke me up in a panic this morning, telling me something was wrong with the tank, it's really quiet she says. It is very quiet :) Anyways, I was having to empty it out every other day of liquid. No matter what I did. It was also blowing micro bubbles big time. I also think it was hindering the flow through the fuge. So to compensate for the lack of a skimmer I'll just be upping my wc.
I'm excited to see what affect this has on my pod population in the fuge. I read that a skimmer on a nano tank can be detrimental to them. I can see where this would be so in a smaller fuge like mine. Time will tell.....
P.S. HappyCoral has a new fish list up! Way cool. Because sis got her clown she ordered me a Wetmorella Albofasciata (White Banded Possum Wrasse) I'm so excited. Now I'll have all the fish I've wanted :)

Hey! No dogging the 26 allowed :smash: lol On a good note, my Clam has finally put her foot down. The fuge has cleared up with the new lamp, no more red slime :) My tank is doing wonderfully! Everything happy, healthy and growing. My new Blenny is eating like a pig and getting fat. She's eating everything I put in there and then some. Can't wait for the new Possum Wrasse. Hopefully she'll put a dent in the bristle worm population. I know six lines eat em. Once again I just got to many in there for my own comfort. Don't like seeing them crawling on everything, especially my clam :(
On a sad note, my Flame Scallop has passed. I just have to get the nerve up and dig it out of the LR. It's in a pretty tight little spot. I knew she wouldn't last long. Was just trying to give it a chance outside of the LFS...r.i.p. lil scallop :(

If I put one on the back wall I get to much flow on the front SB~which blows the heck outta my fungia and duncan. I've got a dead spot on the left side that's now showing signs of cyno. I'm def not over feeding (1xdaily)
Here's a pic of my tank. Please any suggestions as to where you might put them for best flow. Let me know :)

Wow Jamie you have them where I placed my Koralias. Did you try angling one away from the glass more?
