Ok Scooter has made an appearance but she's acting strange. Skittish movements and some of her fins look frayed :( WTH? Would the Cleaner Shrimp attack her? I've seen Scooter allow the Shrimp to clean her but nothing aggressive.

I have no idea what this could be. Frayed fins including the tail. Happened over night. .0 ammonia and .0 nitrites. This same thing happened to Dilly the Mandarin. It was quick! There are no there physical signs of illness. No gasping, no slime. Dang it!!!

I keep thinking it's gotta be Fin Rot. But tank conditions are good. Actually just did a 6 1/2g WC and I do this every 10-14 days.
So maybe it's her diet? She gets NutraMar Ova, Rods Complete, Reef Frenzy and Hikari Frozen Brine shrimp, every day at least 3 of them.

Can you set up a small qt and add copper to stabilize the fish. If it was me that is what I would do.

I can't reach her without tearing up my tank :( This same thing happened to Dilly. It has to be something in the SB thats causing it. Her tail is all but gone. That quick!!

It is 6 a.m. and I've been checking on Scooter all night. Don't think she slept all night either. If by chance she makes it to the front of the tank, I'm going to net her and put her in a 5g bucket of fresh SW I made up yesterday. I've no QT tank so that'll have to do. There is a heater and I'll put her food jar in as well just to make her more comfortable.
I'll treat her with Maracyn 2.

Well Scooter came out this morning and I was able to net her. Actually she was in her jar :) Easy pezy! She is now in a 5g bucket with heater and I added the first of a 5 day treatment, of Maracyn 2. Headed to the LFS to pick up a small sponge filter. Wish Scooter & me luck!!

Day 3 of treatment. She's still alive :) Not sure if she's eating or not. I'm putting the food right in front of her so I can only hope. But she's not biting so far :( Good news is there seems to be no further damage to her fins.

Thanks Taz, I hope she does too! I just finished up putting her back into the DT. Her fins look good and there is a very tiny bit of her tail fin there. Seems her tail got the worst of it :( All other fins look normal.
So now the rest is up to her. Of course she's in hiding now so the wait once again begins. I hope she comes out to eat!!

Well I fear the worst....I haven't seen Scooter since around 4-5pm yesterday. She had come out by her jar and I tried putting some food in front of her but she wouldn't touch it. Turn my head for a second and she's no longer there. Can't see her anywhere :(
And to think on the 20th if this month I would have had her a year......damn it this hurts!!

There is a reason I hate roller coasters!! 1pm and taaa daaa!! Here's Scooter! Sitting along side her feeding jar. But she's yet to go in. Soooo I once again slowly drop the food in front of her and nothing. Then I added food to the jar and turned it around so the opening is now facing her.
Hopefully she'll go for some Pods that I'm getting from FlynnFish :)

Much better day for Scooter & me too :) She's out and about on the SB. No real swimming yet. What with her tail fin gone and those 2 little ones that flutter by her gills (don't know the name) are way tiny too. But she is scootin around and picking at the SB :-)
On another note I've found what I'm hoping to be my Emerald Crabs molt. To squeamish to crack the shell to find out. Can't find a break in the shell. Saw him eating and crawling all over the place yesterday. We shall see.
I'm just happy Scooter's on the mend!

Parameters are good. Alk was a little high @11.2 but lowered it via fresh ato without kalk. Corals & Fire Fish are fine.
She hasn't come out from her back corner all day. Pods will be here tomorrow and I'm hoping this will entice her into eating.
I don't know what else to do for her :(

If the pods don't get her eating again then you may want to take her out to your qt bucket for a while under close observation at least till she I'd looking good and healthy and active again

Thing about putting her back into QT is she didn't eat the entire time she was in there, 5 days!
The following day after returning her to the DT she ate like a pig and was out all day. Yesterday a.m. she ate and then went into hiding again. Hasn't been out since. What's worse is where she's at I cannot get to.
I'm wondering if maybe the Cleaner Shrimp is scaring her off in her weakened state?

Giving her fresh pods will help. I would just keep feeding her and let her do her thing. The fish knows it does not have the same ability it had befor the fin rot. It is most likely survival instinct taking over. Hiding to heal., try giving her food close to the new hiding spot and try to relax,give it time the fish is still stressed. If you catch her again and put it back in in the bucket you could do more harm then good. Patience! That what I would suggest .

This has got to be the toughest lil fish I've ever had the pleasure of keeping. Scooter is eating!!! I put the tube down right in front of her (in the back corner) and fed some Rods Complete and Nutramar Ova and she went crazy!
My Pods/Rotifers from FlynnFish arrived today. WOW! First time ever buying pods that I could actually see them with my eyes :) LOTS of them lil buggers scootin around. I'll be adding them today when the day lights go off. Thank you FlynnFish!

Yuppers Scooter is eating good. Fed her this a.m. soaking some Nutramar Ova and Brine Shrimp in some Selcon. I'm able to create a small food pile for her so she can eat at her leisure :) which she does-lol
Thanks reefers for the support. Before Scooter I had 2 Target Mandarins die on me, one after another. I was very discouraged to say the least. I was not looking forward to loosing her too. Today I have much hope for her recovery! :)

I've noticed she hasn't lost her thickness but she doesn't swim at all. With no tail fin I'm sure it's more trouble then it's worth for her. She just stays in that lil corner and that is where I place all her food.

That is probably the best thing to do for the fish. If you have some garlic extract and some vitamin c add it to the frozen food while thawing it will help keep the fish also. Kent makes a very strong extract and brite wells vitamin C is very good if your wondering about suggested brands. The garlic is a natural cleanser and homeopathic antibacterial and the vitamin C will help the imune system.

Hatching Brine Shrimp for Scooter! Gotta get some weight on her fast. Got a good look at her belly this morning, not good :( Never seen her like this before. Very concave :( I don't know what else to feed her. I've been feeding her 3x a day. A mix of Nutramar Ova, Rods Complete, Reef Frenzy, NLS Pellets, Hikari Brine Shrimp gut loaded, soaking it all every other day in Selcon.

I was always under the impression that brine shrimp didn't really hold much nutrinal value for fish. Kinda like pork rhines. If it was me I would look for something with high lipids and protein for the fish. Does your local store have a seafood section? Raw oysters chopped up in blender or scallops processed the same way might be a faster and better way to fatin her back up. Food for thought. One scallop would feed her for a while. :oldman:

It's only the adult brine shrimp that have no nutritional value. The baby brine that still have the yoke sack are very nutritional :) but only for the first 12hrs. Once the sack is gone then they become gut loaded with whatever they are being fed. I fed Scooter/tank the baby brine just a couple hours after hatching. Wanna see fish go crazy? Lol
I'm also feeding Scooter Reef Frenzy which has the ingredients you suggested :)

Remember to try not to let the bs egg shels get into the tank as they can have bad effects on fish due to beeing non digestible

Thanks for the heads up Tazzy :) I used a turkey baster and drew up just the newly hatched/moving from the middle of the bottle. Leaving the dead and empty shells to the top and very bottom. :)

Sounds pretty frustrating. I suggest taking the tank apart, scraping/chipping the shrooms off, and putting the tank back together. One afternoon of work and your tank will be back. Personally, I strongly believe that this type of "drastic" effort actually benefits the tank as a whole.

Scooters very active this a.m. More so then the she has been all week. Out an about and I even seen her peck at the SB. Her tail looks much much better an showing new growth. Just hate seeing her so skinny.

Feeding her 3-4x a day is keeping me busy with WC lol. But the pod population is growing rather well :) Can't wait til she's once again munching on them.
I'm thinking of re-homing my cleaner shrimp. It needs a bigger tank and competes with Scooter for the frozen foods :(

If the fish is eating and showing signs of recovery it only makes sense that it use all available calories and fat to regrow the retreated fins. Think as what happens to humans. Your body absorbs all it can to repair or heal itself. We will even shutdown non survival organs and limbs just to survive whatever disease or trauma we in counter . The fish is most likely by instinct useing every resource it has to repair the fins. Make sense?? Just keep stuffing it with food and it will fatten up eventually! Great job pulling it thru !! Keep up the great husbandry or motherly practice if it suites ya better. Either way,good job Jamie! :oldman:

Although there is a FireFish in there I hardly ever see it. Only to eat does it show itself. Otherwise my tank seems fishless. I could take 100 pic's in a day and I bet I'd never capture one of the FF.
I'm to afraid to put any other fish in there least they bump into and get eaten by the MM's.
What is a fish tank without fish?? :(

Yeah I had a fishless tank for several months. It is a bit dull for sure. You should just dig in there and get those maximinis....you could try pointing a powerhead at them and catch them when they start to move. Either way, I think getting them out of there will be worth it for you.

Got a new fish today! Thank you to a Yooper reefer who tore down his tank and to Jim (2FarNorth) I now have a beautiful healthy Neon Damsel :) Big thank you also to Christina (Jim's wife) for transporting & delivering a very happy fish :)

Fish spent the first two hours flying around the tank but now has gone into hiding :(

The Damsel (George) is doing great! Eating anything & everything and is out an about more. This fish simply glows florescent blue. Here's a crappy pic but you can see what I mean.

Sadly my new Damsel has killed my Firefish :( He was my first SW fish bought 4+ yrs ago when he was just over an inch big.
If I'd thought the Damsel was that aggressive I wouldn't have taken him....ugh!

Love how my corals speak to me, clam too. Clam was reaching for the light which is unusual for her. Sure enough one of the bulbs burned out. I thought things looked a lil darker but thought it was all the red shrooms making it look that way...nobody say a word!! Lol
Just very happy that I've saved all my bulbs from the last 3yrs :)

Added a Yellowtail Damsel to my tank today. Wasn't sure the Neon Damsel was gonna tolerate him. A little chasing from the Neon for about 20min but now all is well. The Yellowtail is holding his own and seems unafraid.

Lemme tell ya's, I haven't had the best of luck with SW fish. Very poor choices on my part.

They're actually brown with slightly yellowish skirts. It's only the blue light that makes em look like this.
This is closer to the naked eye.

Well today I was forced to give my skimmer it's very first cleaning, pump an all. Dislodged some bubble algae which then got caught in the pinwheel. Ya know a clean skimmer sure is quiet-lol.
This Neon Damsel sure has made a mess of my tank. Stirred up the entire sand bed causing some issues. Of course he had to dig out under the main rock which caused it to sink/shift. To say nothing of the crap he sent flying throughout the entire tank. All my rock is covered! If I blow the rock off you can barely see anything. Then my skimmer picks it up where it sits on the bottom. The intake pump picks it up, which deposits it into the fuge where it too sits.
Yesterday during a WC I siphoned 5g's out from the fuge and wow, the water was almost black!
Now I'm seeing cyano in the DT :( Even my Hermit had cyano on his shell!
Honestly I don't know how I'm still maintaining this tank. What with the shroom's taking over, numerous fish loss, battling bubble algae and now this new issue with the SB being completely tore up. Yet I look at it and some how I still think it's beautiful......

UGH!!! Gotta get this fish out of my tank!!! On a happy note I'm UPGRADING!!! Yupper's it's final. Not exactly sure if I'm gonna build it, have it built or buy one but I'm doing it. 45 gallon cube. Hopefully rimless, if not I'll deal. Definitely all new rock. Only thing from my present tank that's going in it will be some corals. If I can find a great deal on LED's I just may switch. If I can find a decent stand that would house a decent sump, might go that route too. Lots to think about......

Update: Saw it!! Hiding out in the back (of course story of my tank) under the rock that the Neon Damsel excavated.

Would you believe out of the two LFS we have here neither one of them had a Yellowtail Damsel.

The major one that's been selling SW for over 25+yrs seems to be on the decline. Dead Green Mandarin in a 10g tank when there is a 10yr old 120 sitting not 5' away from it. :( Dead Clown Goby's in the 20g's. Hardly any fish to speak of. This just totally depresses me :( I know the owner very well, even worked for him at one time many years ago. Just so sad....

the tank looks great. there are several stores out this way too that are lacking inventory, mostly its due to the shipments getting delayed due to weather causing the boxes to get too cold, even heard of a shipment freezing this year, though i can agree about the misplacement of the mandarin.

I'm doing a HAPPY DANCE!! Finally the Aurora Goby & Pistol hooked up and have happily taken up position IN FRONT!!
Haven't seen my Pistol this happy in over a year. He's actually venturing out way beyond his tunnel. And the Goby has taken up guard :)

And the fight with the Cyano begins! First, all RO/DI filters changed, including membrane. New water being made now. New lamps were supposed to be delivered today but of course everything else came but those. I did add half cup of PhosGuard even though my PO4 is only reading 0.02.
I'm pretty sure the Cyano is from the very old lamps.

I can't make up my mind!! Went to Pet Smart today and for this weekend only they have a 40B for $40! WOW!! The tank looked huge-lol. At that price I'd be able to get the LED's & all new rock/sand and a stand.
I'm still waiting to hear from the guy who builds tanks and what it would cost me for a 45 rimless cube. At least $200 just for the tank.

I'm going to allow the 26 to run until the 40 is cycled. My lights should be in by that time, hopefully. Figure a couple months or so.
I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Pukani again. Maybe a finer sand. My skimmer will work great. Not sure what I'm going to do about filtration....hmmm? Definitely cannot afford a sump.

Thanks Tazzy....kind of feeling a little better though. Went and picked up my new tank, ordered a stand from DF&S :) and ordered 25lbs of Reef Saver Rock from BRS. I'm thinking this completely new build will cost me around $500. So far tank, stand and rock is $250. Not bad right?

I say MB7-biopellets-or-gfo&carbon reactor, nice skimmer, some live rock, and you will be all set! Paint the back, and hang equipment off the back is my recomendation, unless you plan on a big footprint skimmer.

As for the skimmer, I'm running the Reef Octopus BH-1000 now-lol. Got it with this upgrade in mind. Great skimmer! Lights will be LED's from OceanRevive. Their units are getting great reviews and I can't beat the prices-lol. $199 for 120w dimmable, remote control, digital timer and 1 power- cord, adjustable hanging kit included :) I'm excited!
Best of all, I keep thinking about how much I've learned in the last 4 1/2yrs and know exactly what NOT to do-lol.

Jamie I always get my tanks for sumps from the selling forums or freecycle. Sometimes people that kept lizards just want to get rid of the tank. They hold water, may be scratched up but it doesn't need to be pretty. Craigslist sometimes has a gooddeal on the little ones. It is the wrong season right now for garage sales but they are a great source for finding tanks. You will not regret a sump. I could not believe how helpful they are once I made my first one. I hope you can find one. Your stand should give you enough room for one

It's all good! Our LFS was having a sale today on tanks. $35 for a 20g long. I had $30 in credit (a gift from my son) so the tank cost me $5 :)
So I'm have a custom sump made as I'm writing this. All plumbing, return pump & my tank drilled!!
