I'll be surprised if I have much left by then. Just today I sold my 17 head of Purple Duncan and my 15 polyp of purple/green center acan. Last month I sold my Fungia and rainbow acan enchinata. Plus I've got my 30 heads of Candy Cane up for sale.
Aside from the acan they all just out grew the tank.
I've got these funky *** worms that are every where and are recking havoc on my zoa's :( I'm just not happy with my tank at all!! I don't want to put anything else in it. I don't like the fish I have in there.
Blah blah blah blah blah.....humbug!!

You are going to LOVE the 40 breeder! I bet you can find someone to put together a 2x4 stand, in your area, cheap. Post a service needed thread on creigslist.

@Chris: I can probably build one myself actually :) We shall see when the time comes.
I'm sure I'm going to love anything bigger :) I do love my 26, but there's only so much I can do with it. I've found that I'm a constant tinkerer and am always working my way around to changing things up just to keep my interest. Tank pretty much runs itself these days. Only thing I really do is bi-weekly WC and empty out the skimmer :) Boring!!!
Thank you Seano! Actually I just put stuff in and it grows :) if I had to do it over again I'd never have put the zoa's on the main rock work. Now, their everywhere!! Lol

It doesn't seem likely to me. When it gets more comfortable with its new surroundings I doubt "Jaws" could intimidate it.

Well sadly the 6 line disappeared. Also after 3+yrs my Tangaroa Goby has given up the ghost also. So now I'm down to 2 FF. Neither of which I like very much as they hide more then anything. 1 I've had for 3yrs and is in beautiful condition. The other has been bullied yet holds its own.
Won't be putting anymore fish in I think :) Maybe wait for an up grade or until I can remove the remaining two MM's.
All in all the tanks doing good.

Sorry to hear about your fish losses. Nevertheless you have a beautiful tank and should be proud of it. I look forward to your 40 gallon build if you go forward with it. I was looking at 40b tanks just yesterday and still love their dimensions. Nice thing is th at since you are going from 26 to 40 gallons, you can use a lot of the same equipment you're currently have running.

Hey Miz...sorry to hear about the losses. Your tank always looks great!!! At the end of the day, fish die... but that's what your clean up crew is for. It's the circle of life.... and you have your own little eco system in place.
:fish2: :crabby: :fishbones:
On a side note, you should definitely get rid of the MMs...and upgrade! :)

Thank you for the encouraging words Becky. I would love to upgrade and if all works out with Binford giving me a 40b it just may happen. It's still up in the air though as I would still have to come up with items such as a return pump, sump, plumbing, lights (not sure if my T5's would fit) more rock, proper size skimmer and let us not forget LIVE STOCK! So it's the $$$ that overwhelms me :duh:

That dun sums it up ! My brother has A dually 4x4 with 6 inch lift and needed some frame repair work to get ready for plowing season. After he drove me home from my treatment we decided to get r done. So while I was changeing to some work clothes he chose to back the truck in by himself into my three car garage with a car and a truck already in it. So it was tight and he never even saw the tank next to the bench. 1 ton trucks have lots of blind spots. He really does feel bad about it !He was even going to drop it off on his way back home. Sorry Jamie, but it was not on purpose honestly. :oldman:

Well I'm feeling much better about my tank today. I've been kind of down about it. Fish dying, loosing my favorite zoas and worse of all, NO place to put any new corals.
Today I changed some of that. Removed about 50 polyps of zoas from the back wall and brought them into the LFS, who then traded me for my new Scooter Dragonet! He's awesome!!! He's eating pods!! Watching him now clearing them off of the back wall!! Yaaaa Freaking hooooo!!!! Hasn't stopped pecking on everything since I put him in the tank. Doesn't seem shy at all and I do think he's even pecking at the flat worms :blackeye: So nice having a fish to watch in my tank:big_grin: I've also raised my Clam up higher. Doesn't look the best as you'll see from the pic but it's doing wonders for it's mantel color.
Today PetSmart had it's grand opening in Marquette! Of course I had to stop in and check it out :) Of course I headed right for the tanks! What did I find? An awesome 56g with stand, light and glass tops for $299 Hopefully come tax return it'll be mine!! But that is definitely the tank for me. Love the cube look and it has depth which I like a lot. Dimensions: 30" W x 18" D x 24" H
Stand dimensions: 31"W x 19"D x 29.5"H
That's about it for now. I'm gonna sit back and enjoy my new Scooter. Hopefully he'll live a long, happy life in my tank.
Here's a couple of updated tank pics from today.

sweet love the column tank like that actually thaught about buying one but couldn't justify the price since it would have been a goldfish tank
on a side note avoid the cheaply built partical board stand that it is displayed with and build yourself a good custom stand
I had one of those cheap ones once and not only did it not have room for any equipment in it but it got wet and jacked the one corner of a 75g tank up 1/4" causing a leak

A very generous person whom I am blessed to call my friend gifted me $200 to go towards my upgrade. Upgrade I will!! So folks expect to see a new build coming shortly after the new year!! The tank will be between a 50-60g!! For me this is WOW!!
With so many new ideas running around in my head, this is surely to be the most exciting experience ever! So many do's and don'ts! So much to share with the old and the new.
ATM all is well with my tank. Few spots of bubble algae but I easily remove it with each WC. Nothing major and to be expected considering all the frozen I've been feeding these last 4-5 months. Trying to keep certain fishes alive.
I'm still fighting the Digitate Hydroids. I've taken to squirting them with boiling water. Seems to work but there are a few harder to get at ones hanging on. Those ones are to close to my clam and within my zoas to risk using the hot water. So I try pulling them off with tweezers.
Scooter the Dragonet is doing wonderfully! Eats everything! I'm actually no longer feeding my tank flake or pellets of any kind. Frozen only! Rods Complete, Nutramar Ova and PE Mysis. Small quantities 2x daily. Of course everything is happy with this :)

FINALLY got to PetSmart today. Found the tank I want! 46g bow front, with stand, glass covers and even a Marine LED. The stand will fit a 20g sump if I choose to go that route.
Tank specs=36.4" x 16.4" x 21.9"
12" longer then my 26g
Now I'm gonna need to look for new lights, oh man :( lol
Then again I really like the 56g just not how tall it is.....decisions decisions???
Here's the bowfront. You can just make out the difference in hight with the 56 on the left.

Hangs from the ceiling or you cold make rack. LED's are no big deal. You just need to acclimate the coral to the intensity. With it being dimable you can start em low and creep it up slowly over time !

Thanks guys! My Hammer split again so that makes 4 heads now :) I bought it with just 1 a year ago. It went through a very rough time, thought for sure I was gonna lose it. Growing good now!
All else is well. Scooters doing awesome, fat en happy. Eats great! Seems to favor the Hikari frozen brine shrimp (which are gut loaded) and the Nutramar Ova. Just ordered a pod special from Reefs2go :)
I'm only feeding frozen now. For the last 5 weeks and it seems to be going great. No algae issues at all. Bi-weekly 20% WC seems to be sufficient. Skimmers doing its job keeping the surface clean but it clogs easily which is a pita. Gotta clean it out once a week :(
As you can see I'm having a red shroom bonanza! Freaking things are popping up everywhere. I must fish out 2-4 a week that are just floating around.

I just wanted to tell you I have been reading your tank build at night when I am having trouble sleeping. I have enjoyed it. Looks like you've had your trials and tribulations with it all but it is absolutely beautiful. I have been afraid to try the two part dosing and I am going to have to wrap my head around it and attempt it. I don't understand it so am afraid I will cause more harm that good. I need to get a guy to come and look at my set up and give me some pointers. I know I need to change my float valve to a float switch with a back up switch and it needs to come from a barrel of top off water instead of directly from my RO/DI . I just haven't wrapped my head around actually doing it.
Once I do that I was thinking of adding the two part to my top off barrel. Still thinking on it. Not a crisis yet as I don't have a lot LPS in there yet.
Your tank is an inspiration.

You are welcome. I had a 90 Gallon up for 1 1/2 years. I loved it but had to take it down due to it not fitting on 2 beams and when the grandkids got excited it would bounce. I was nervous about it breaking so i sold it and tore it down.
This time I went with a 70 G Cube. It fit over 2 beams easily and I plumbed it downstairs to the basement and made a fishroom for my sump. Its been up a over a year now but am starting over with corals. I will have to get another clean up crew as well as I lost it all. Also, I need repopulate pods as I don't see any anymore. With all the illness I have been fighting since last April the tank just couldn't be my main priority. I am finally getting it back in shape and just started adding corals again.
I look forward to watching your new build. I have a 46 BF downstairs that I converted to FW for the grandkids. It really needs a good water change and cleaning. FW can take neglect much better than SW. It was my first SW tank. Then I was given the 90 but the CUBE is definitely my favorite of all. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the footprint and floor space.

I got same problem with my reds -popping up all over. My Blues don't spread unless I have moved them.
I had taken a razor blade and cut a few out as they were crowding out some z's but they grew right back in couple weeks - seem even bigger.... HA
Maybe if you cut out the whole group might work

Hi Fish Dad! Long time no see you :) I'll be doing a wc in the next couple of days. Gonna do some cutting then, see what comes of it. Man these shrooms are all over the place. I can't understand how the got into my fuge Would have had to go through the intake pump while they were very very tiny

Tank is doing well. No changes at all. No new corals in over a year now. No place to put any >sigh< Fish are doing well. Scooter eats great, feeding him 3x a day. Would love a new fish but I wont risk it due to the Maxi Mini's. I'm happy Scooter the Dragonet stays clear of them :) as do the 2x fire fish.
Main complaint= To many bristle worms for my liking, just creepy lol, zoas receding, shrooms everywhere and Tank is to small.
Happiest about my tank= No issues, very stable, lots of coral growth, Scooter Dragonet healthy and eating well, Blue Tipped Hammer now has 7 heads :)

Well I'll be getting it drilled that's for sure. If for no other reason to leave that option available. I'm also on a major budget so I chose a good skimmer rated up to 100g just in case a sump doesn't happen any time soon. I'll just hang my HOB fuge on the back for now :)

The first time I did a sump I was nervous about it. Turned out someone gave me an old scratched up tank and I put baffles in and used flex hose to run under the tank. Was much easier and less costly than I expected. I was amazed at how it made my water changes so much easier

Where do you get your Coral Extacy? I need to get some. I found a place called Aquaculture Nursery Farms and a place on ebay. Just wondering if you have a better deal. With shipping Aquaculture is $13.40 for 2 oz. Is that a good deal?

On another note, I'm doing as well as can be expected. Definitely no easier the second time around. But I'm managing :)
Sadly Fang Blenny had to be removed and sent to fishy heaven :(

Do you have a screen cover on your tank by any chance? Any cover at all? That clear acrylic mesh is wonderful. I don't know if you have a Home Depot or Lowes but the screen kits are very easy and you can cut them to shape around hang on items. I cut notches in the frame for my cords so there is no gaps at all. I was worried I would lose my firefish or my fairy wrasse because my clowns chase any new fish in the tank. Now I have now worries at all. Jimflies has the mesh if you need some.

Did another 5 1/2g WC and am celebrating Scooter's (Dragonet) 5th month in my tank!! I feel so lucky to have her :) Especially having lost 2 Mandarins.
Only thing's I'm really not liking about my tank is 1 all these freaking shrooms!! They're everywhere! Today during the WC I took the siphon to em in hopes of damaging them beyond repair. If not our club will be purchasing the New Algae Vac next month. I'm first in line to test it out on the Shrooms :)
2nd on the list of dislike is, I can't keep my new skimmer box stationary. Not sure if its the water level that's dropping before the ATO kicks on or the MP10 across from it that's causing the unstable water level in it. But my son has had to wake me up 3 time now cause the box keeps draining.
That's it for now. Candy Cane seems to be recovering and all else is well.

Dipped all new corals in CoralRX Pro (it's been over a year since anything new has been added) But still I've managed to acquire bubble algae and Aptasia!!! WTH!? First noticed the Aptasia in my fuge so I can only assume it came in on a pod/chaeto pack. I removed it via siphon. Last night I found 2 in my DT, very far from each other. Cheato is a great place for aptasia to hide. The most common delivery source of bubble alge and aptasia or glass anemones as some call them is frozen food. They are just a PITA even with rinsing you will still get some. Sorry. It's just impossible for them to keep em out of the huge vats they grow the shrimp in. :oldman:

Thanks for the info Chuck. Didn't know they could actually come by way of frozen foods. I would think being frozen would kill any living thing, no?
Anyways I was given some Joes Juice which by the way is now called AptasiaX and applied it to the 2 in my tank. 1 is totally gone and I noticed the other still alive this a.m. Will do another app during today's WC. >sigh< The bubble algae is spreading :( I siphon out as much as possible but it just shows up elsewhere. My nitrates read 0 using the API test, TDS also read 0. Guess I need to look into some form of po4 remover....

I noticed the sponge in my skimmer which acts as a bubble trap, was loaded with gunk. Proceeded to take it out for a good rinsing but low and behold its loaded with pods! Now what do I do? Don't want to shake all that gunk into my tank, don't want to loose all the pods either? Always something...

Sometimes you have to kill a few pods to keep the nutrients in check. Don't worry there are plenty more in the tank.
Also I have to agree with you that frozen food would not be a vector for introducing pests. However, feeding a lot of frozen food will feed them an encourage them to spread. I have heard (and believe it to be true) that brine shrimp eggs can carry hydroid "eggs".

I agree that it would seem not possible but... if you ready any of Calfo"s writing he does a very convincing job explain the the dormat state that single cell animals and simple life fourms like aptaisia can actually be frozen and regenrate during thaw. The shrimp as you stated also carry the spours or eggs as you call them from digestion in the vats. I started my new tank with all base rock, removed all coral from existing rock and remounted all coral to bare base rock, dipped everything in everything from revive to bayer and kept them in QT for almost eight weeks.Did weekly aptashia X attacks and. When I did start cheato and macro algae I did it with small quarter size pieces. after three weeks of intrudecing livestock to the new tank started feeding rods and frozen brine shrimp again which I washed and soaked even!! Guess what I got ??? Aptashia ! go figure?? so believe what you want.I no longer use brine shrimp and make my own frozen food from frozen sea food and zoplankton. Guess what I don"t hardly get anymore?? Aptashia!! I think I will stick with Calfo's input :oldman:

Guess what I don"t hardly get anymore?? Aptashia!! I think I will stick with Calfo's input :oldman:
Binford - I would be interested in learning more about cnidarians surviving flash freezing... could you share a link or two of Calfo's reasoning?
Is it possible that you were not 100% effective at screening them during the transfer to the new tank? That seems like the most likely scenario to me. My first thought is that the teeny-tiny (aka microscopic) early life stages (zygotes and planula (thank you Wikipedia) slipped past your extensive attempts to not transfer them to the new tank. Three weeks seems like a reasonable amount of time for them to settle and grow large enough for you to spot them. I would also venture to guess that you "don't hardly get anymore" because you're doing something to manage them. While in those first three weeks you were not actively managing, since you assumed there were none in the tank. This seems a more likely explain to me.
Miz - You should take a small aiptasia covered chuck of LR and do an experiment: Freeze it solid in a small amount of water, thaw it, put it back in the tank, and see what happens! Granted it could get recolonized and look like "regeneration". Who knows may be freezing rock is the ultimate solution for aiptasia control... we already cook rock so why not?

Well Tom if I hadn't already killed em and if they weren't on the very large base rock, I would certainly have given that a try. Lol
Would be a very interesting experiment though wouldn't it?

I will do some digging on this Tom,but will do it in another post instead of hijacking Jamie's tank thread. Lol I should be a little more clear on what I meant. I wasn't trying to say that fully developed aptasia are present in the food but the small spores they release to spread or fertilized egg in layman terms are present and when thawed are released to carry on the circle. I'm not saying don't use frozen brine. That's up to the reefer to decied. I personally believe like phyto plankton ,brine shrimp is an over used food that does not deliver quality results. I see it as feeding your livestock pork rhines,no real nutritional value but filling and tastey. Mysis which is a freshwater shrimp is a much better food source for all livestock and is better bang for the buck IMHO.. I do believe the food was really the cause of the break out in the new tank. I was not talking about just a few but a considerable amount which reassured my belief that the theory was valid. Aptaisa is just a pest that once you get them it is virtually impossible to rid the tank of them permentally, all we can do is try to maintain control of the spreading of them? we still get the occasional two or three at times and correct it like Jamie did with aptasia x.. To be continued when time is more available and sorry to throw what seams to become a heated debate in your tank thread Jamie. :oldman:

I'm totally disgusted with my tank :( First it was flat worms...treated for them. Now it's bubble algae...sucked as many out as I can with each wc and within 2 weeks there's more to be removed :( Then I had to treat some unknown nem's with AptasiaX, which seemed to work but I found another one last night :( I've got Digitate Hydroids and a ton of Asterina Stars which are having a blast munching on the coralline on my LR. Oh and let me not forget that my tank is being run over by shrooms!
2FarNorth (James) Sent me the new Algae Mower Vac Algae Mower - aquarium cleaning tool (Patent Pending) (http://www.algaemower.com/)
and a Manjo Wand, which I took to some of the shrooms last night. Only time will tell........

Well I used the Algae Mower today on some shrooms. No way did it do what I thought it would. The drill bit actually couldn't grab hold of the shrooms, more or less just tore the crap out of em. Did get rid of some though. I got scared about water quality so I stopped.
Sadly my lil clam took a couple of tumbles. Hopefully it's ok. It's open anyways :)
Got rid of a bunch of bubble algae. Crap is everywhere! Need to figure out how to run some GFO or PO4 sponge in my system without a reactor.

That's some good numbers. What we're they before you started ?? You should be ok,that's the same doase I used for the Mrs ATO. You should keep a log of the alk at least on daily basis for a week to ensure your adding enough or to much. Testing right now is critically important to get and maintain the results your trying to achieve. Food for thought is all. See ,you can use it in your top off. Easy peazy ! :oldman:

I wouldn't try to nuke shrooms, manual mass removal will be your friend. Zapping them and letting them break down in the tank could easily result in the exact opposite of what you want to happen..... not to mention it could destroy water quality if they do fully die. Same with mulching them up inside the tank, if a tiny part of the mouth makes it you have a new shroom... or a new 100 shrooms! :(
Which is why I am not a fan of putting weeds in a flower garden ;)
In a 26 gallon tank this is very sound advice. You state your havering bubble algae issues also. If it was me I would address both of these problems at the same time. You should remove the rock with the bubbles and scrape as much of them off as you can then scrub the area with a tooth brush and kalkwasser mixed into a paste then rinse the area with fresh water, remove the shrooms at the same time. All you have to do is peel em off with a finger nail at the base of the mushroom. We use a small power head also which really helps. Do not pop the algae in your tank!! It will spread like wild fire. I really don't like to introduce crabs but emeralds are known to do a god job of removing this pest. Certain fish will pick at them also but they also pop em and can make it worst. If it was me I would do this with your next water change. It will take several scrubbings but this has been our best method when we have these problems. I would also recommend you raise your mag to 1500+ ppm. It will help control algae. You can use phos guard in a mesh bag in a flow area to get yor Po4 down also. God luck and remember one certain fact of this hobby is we are all watching and waiting for that next disaster !! It's a never ending fire drill, which is why you feel so much pride when it is going well! :oldman:

When I remove the bubble algae it's during a water change with the siphon hose, definitely no popping!
There are 2 very large main rocks that I cannot remove from my tank. So I'm going to try using a pair of stainless steal nippers and cut around the bottom of the shrooms.
Oh and I have to many bristle worms to be using my fingernail on anything-lol I'm gonna keep at it as I'm already thinking of all new rock :(

That is a pretty good jump for one day. Levels are ok but your alk jumped almost a full point. I would dump your make up and change the doase to half of what you did. These numbers tell me your adding more then your tank can consume. Good luck!

If you decide to address the mag, first you need to test to see what your mag is at. Then take it from there. I doubt your system will need much to get your levels up. One gallon of tech M would last you a longtime. Mag is something you can doase just weekly unless you go all SPS then it becomes something you need to doase more often.

I picked this guy up today. He's pretty cool and by far the fastest snail I've ever seen-lol.

Yeah know there's just no rest from the worry~lol. This new snail I got is behaving very strange. It spends the majority of it's time laying on it's back with it's body extended outside the shell. At first I thought it was dead (I haven't had very good luck with the giant nass snails) and so I went to move it and off it goes. Never does it burrow under the sand, mostly just travels along the glass and hangs out in Scooters feeding jar.
I added some filter floss to the return chamber of my skimmer, WOW! Did a water change today and the floss that's been in there for a week was nasty nasty nasty. Which now makes me wonder if my skimmer isn't skimming right?? Especially if that much nastiness is going back into my tank :(
My Blue Tipped Hammer got so top heavy that it broke off today while I was cleaning the tank. So now I guess it's time to frag it, but I've no tools :( Now it's sitting on the SB until I figure something out.....
All in all my tank is doing well. The Kalkwasser in the ATO is working out great. Parameters are stable as never before.

That's great news Jamie ! Have you considered a pair of diagonal wire cutters from the hardware?? I have used them befor and it worked really good !

I'm gonna check out Lowes for something like a lil hack saw blade. Cutters I worry about as they pinch more then cut and I've seen what that does on a Duncan. Split the stalk all the way up to the polyp :(

Woke up to my clam on the sand bed. Not sure how long it's been down there. Between 1:30am and 10:30am. She's closed up tight so I'm just sitting here hoping and praying she's alright >.<

Well I picked up a big pack of Rods Complete which Scooter just loves. As for corals I wouldn't buy anything from them...it hurt to bring the Hammer there, Very worried it's going to die. But times are very hard right now and I had to. But at least the tank and other pets will be taken care of for a while :)

I'm happy to report that after my last wc, a week ago. Having siphoned out what little Bubble Algae there was left, I'm seeing NO new growth! Yahoo!!
My diligence of manual removal bi-weekly along with raising my mag and keeping it at 1500, I believe to be the reason.

That's great news!!! Good to know all your hard work has paid off for you. Tank looks healthy and happy. Scooter is adorable :) I was trying to get my mag up that high but everything's been running smoothly with it around 1400. Plus I've noticed a huge change in algae growth since I changed my lighting over to kessil LEDs. I havent seen any grow on the glass since i switched from t-5s. Plus the only thing ive seen on the rocks is coralline.

Well tonight I took a good look at my rock. Another reefer posted an id this algae and I've got/have had the same for quit some time. I now see where it's cropping up in several different areas :(
It's red, slippery an soft and slightly thick. Does not branch, more carpet like.

Definitely not Cyano! This stuff is difficult to scrape off the rock, and it's only on the rock. There's even spots of it in very low light areas.
I keep my rock as free of debris as possible with a turkey baster daily.
I've seen my Mexican Turbo eat it big time but this snail has got to be the dumbest ever. He only crawls on the rock when I actually put him on it. Otherwise he's always on the glass-lol

08-13-2013, 10:15 PM
Update: After more research I've discovered it is *Red Turf Algae* What is worse is that it thrives in high light, high flow and clean water conditions.
Remedy is the Mexican Turbos and a Tuxedo Urchin.
Chuck do you think I could put a Tuxedo Urchin in my tank?

Changed wc schedule from bi-weekly to every 10days. Happy to report, removed 1 very small bunch of Bubble Algae from the back wall. I'm seeing NO new growth on the rock at all :)
I do have to say that this shroom infestation has me totally depressed about the *look* of my tank. While everything is happy and thriving, parameters are well balanced and stable, I just can't get past the way they are making my tank look. To say nothing of them choking out my Sun Coral and my Zoa Island :(
Thing is nobody has any ideas on how I can get rid of them, without harming my tank.

Have you tried kalkwasser paste ? Only other way I could think is to remove the rock and use a razor blade to remove them and then take em to LFS for credit. And yes I think you could keep tuxedo urchin just fine. I have two in my fuge and they're doing fine

Just take some of your Kalkwasser and mix it up with R/O tell it's a runny paste then turn off your pumps and power heads and coat the shrooms with it. I wouldn't do all at once but it should do the job

How long do I leave it on them? Does it need to be removed? What about a rise in my Alk? How do I compensate for that?

I'm worried :( Got up this a.m. And Scooter's hiding out in the back corner. Almost a year and she's never behaved this way. Always ready to eat.
Tested right away....
My parameters are a bit off. Ca-500, Alk-11.2, Mag-1500, Ammonia-0, trates-0, trites-0, Ph-8.2 and SG-125
No changes made to tank. All corals look good as do inverts. The Fire Fish is fine also.
Please let Scooter be alright. We were just getting ready to celebrate 1yr!!
