    I agree with many of the points/methods you mention.I also use Xenia as an export,i am a firm belever in using natural flora/fauna in the tank to uptake nutrients.I also employ a DSB(no plenum,3-4" depth) and love the stablilty they provide a reef tank.
    I disagree about stirring the sand,especially the deep layers.I let the DSB expel this gas on its own.There has been a new article published about DSB/plenum//SSB and how the systems fared against eachother.
    One of the intersting things was that denitrification can take place in as little as 2" of sand.This anoxic area is also capable of denitrification.As far as clumping,that generally happens when calc/alk/ph/CO2 levels get out of whack.I agree though,i like to let conchs,snails,and the worms present in the SB do there job.
    One thing i dont do often is waterchanges,just 5 gallons every 2 months.

    As for the xenia,I'd give you some if you were close by.I hear its a poor shipper so it probably wouldn't be cost efficient to ship.Local reef clubs would be a good place to look into for that.
