Just be sure to do everything slowly, it is the change that hurts them the worst. Their body is full of water, so if the tank water changes it is not the same as their internal fluid. That is why they deflate and inflate themselves, to equalize everything.

I would definately want to keep the clown away from it if it is really roughing it up...

turning into a ball of goo is not a sign of dying its a sign of dead sorry to say once its goo it gone to no point of return. you want to stop this before it happens.check those parimeters befor doing another water change buffer as needed ph cal alk ect if you tnitrates and ammonias are in check.
