Default My new DIY sump...thanks to Davenjz

Dave helped me out big time! He walked me through step by step how to
disassemble my sump, remove the old baffles, and install new ones to
improve water volume and skimmer performace. For all the details check
out my blog. But, I really just wanted to thank Dave for his time, and
knowledge on the topic! I love my new skimmer, and actually had a good
time building it! If you like what you see on my blog and what to do
something like that on your own. Let me know and I will pass along what
    Dave taught me! -DIRT#ed_op#br#ed_cl#

Looks great Tyler, hope its working better for you.You should notice an increase in your skimmers performance with the higher/stable water level.

I'm going to guess, by way of the diameter of the hose, and the chamber size for the return pump... Not much. Which, in my opinion is a good thing....Unless you are using your return as part of your total "flow" in your system.

A slower sump/refugium flow is a good thing. Lower flow = greater "contact time" for the water to pass through the refugium, skimmer chamber etc. This ensures that the sand bed and live rock flora and fauna, macro algaes, and the skimmer proper have time to "uptake" the free floating nutrients in the water.

If you had water "coursing" through your sump, refugium, skimmer etc. the majority of the waste products in the water would simply pass through these systems and return to the display.

I have to agree with DavidP on that one.... not like some idiot I know who's pumping 500gph through a 10g sump/refuge..... I think my cheato is more of a machanical filter than biological... but it still grows very fast... in a very lightly loaded display tank.
