Any chance of a pic??? At first I guess I just figured it was the start of a diatom bloom (and it may still be), but that is generally associated with new tanks. Is the grey over the whole tank or just spots???

If it's under the surface of the sand, that's normal. That's the anaerobic area of your sand bed that is full of beneficial bacteria and stuff. It's generally not a good idea to stir it up.

I'll occasionally put some rocks out of my tank that have been buried in the sand for a while and they're almost black.
