Folks,

Lets talk about power back up systems, what kind of back up systems do you have, how much time does it sustain and how much did it cost you. ..

Also post pics if you have any ...

We lose power several times each summer and have far more frequent brown outs. I use a 1400VA UPS for the cable modem, router and APEX controller and it runs most of the tanks (sans lights) including return pump and Vortechs for about an hour. The Vortechs have their own battery backup that runs about 6 more hours.

For longer outages, I have a 6500KW gasoline generator that can run the essentials in the home (assuming I'm home to get it plugged in and started.)

I'm currently looking into a whole-house generator. I learned that in addition to the cost of the generator and installation - I'll likely also have to upgrade the gas meter to accommodate the additional flow at an additional $1K

I have been thinking of a generator myself. I was thinking about it last year but this year I am a little more serious. I am inclined towards a portable one like the yamaha or honda. If I buy a big one my apartment neighbors will not like it lol.

Anyone else with any kind of back up?? Like a simple battery operated power head etc...

I use a battery powered air pump. I have to be home to use it.

I'd like to get the backup battery for my vortech, but haven't yet.

I used to have a Tripp Lite power inverter that could be connected to any amount of battery backup, but never got around to buying the batteries and connecting it. I ended up selling it last fall.

My neighbor has a generator...he's almost always home. So I've just run a cord across the lawn and helped buy him gas in the past.

Short term I have several battery air pumps, a couple are the ones that plug in to the 120v wall outlet and come on on battery when they sense a power outage.
For longer term I have a Champion 3500w generator. Its on wheels and can be moved around easily. I store it with a couple extension cords and outlet strips tied to the frame so they don't get legs and the tank is always full with a litte StaBil in it so the gas does not go bad.
It starts first time every time ane even the wife can start it easily.
I did a lot of research before buying and purchased this one on the recommendations from www.RV.net where it is very popular. Thye carry them at Checker/Schucks/Kragen/Murrays/O'Reillys Auto Parts, Parts America and Cabellas as well as some Sams and Costcos. I paid $238 on sale and with a calendar coupon and price match and its one of the best investments I have ever made.

Rob, how long do the Vortech backups last? Also do they have a way to let you know if they power reserve is nearing the end.

Also what is the life of those batteries?

Is it an auto start plugged into your home circuit and what are its capabilities. Also whats the noise level and how much time of support can it provide?
