I have an 8500w that I plug into my house when needed. It runs heat or ac well, oven, and lights, t.v. , and aquarium with 250w MH and t5's. Its ran over night once or twice and many times for several hours. Our power does not go off often but when it does its out for hours. We have two neighbors that work for Consumers Power.

I've got a couple of those B&D portable power packs for starters. One lives in my car and the other in the garage. I can use those to keep the vortech running for an hour or two and have used them lots. While the portable packs are running I drag out the generator and hook up all the hoses, fill it and hope I don't have to use it. The last time the power was out for over 24 hours the tank was fine, the refrigerator stayed cold and I watched Netflicks movies on my laptop. We lose power here every summer so I'd be crazy not to have the generator.
