a fuge is commonly a part of the sump and its sole purpose is natural nutrient export and one step closer to making the tank self sufficient and a complete eco system
also many people use the fuge area for a frag tank
myself my sump consists of 2 chambers chamber 1 is fuge/skimmer/intake chamber and the other chamber is the return area and is where the float switch is located for the ato system
I have been reefing from 08-2007 till 5-2011
reef tanks are like wifes you have to give them some attention every now and then
Some folks also like them because they can help grow pods. Although most water ends up going through a pump before going from the fuge back to the display, so I'm not sure what the mortality rate of pods are going through an impeller?![]()
^ pretty sure mortality of pods through an average return pump isnt so bad, from what Ive heard. Skimmers w/ mesh mods or needle wheels...whole nuther story!
refugiums? Great place to give "refuge" to things in your tank, that need it, like pods or fish that arent doing well in the display tank. Great place to give your display "refuge" from things not wanted there, like macro algea, that can cause a big ol mess in your display, or a damsel, that you added to cycle your tank, and finally caught- but are waiting for someone to come get!
Another good reason to have a refugium area- say you reaquascape your tank. You get things lookin perfect....but have all this expensive live rock left over! Cant toss it aside, and let it dry out! Put it in your refugium area! safe and sound there.
Got some GSP and texas trash polyps that you got without understanding their real estate issues in the display tank? Toss it in the refugium. At some point, someone that you meet will apreciate a frag of it, as much as you did in the early stages of reefing!
Want to see some cool sponges grow from outa no were?? Set up a refugium, and watch and wait.
Just for a few....![]()
Another thing a refugium does that I forgot to mention, if you run it on a reverse photoperiod (lights on when display is off), it helps stabilize pH. It does this because photosynthesis uses CO2, if all lights are off CO2 builds up due to respiration of fish, which causes the pH to drop due to the formation of carbonic acid (CO2+H2O).
