The goals I have for my reefs are stability and biodiversity. The first as related to water parameters. The second is a focus on all the things associated with live rock and live sand.

+1. I agree that these are good goals to attain but befor we get to technical or release our geek on you its best to know what your wanting your tank to look like when your done building that vision. I suggest you and Rachel look at other members reefs and find common ground on what you both like also what you can afford to have it look like. Smart reefers actually have budget plan to what percentage of the income they are willing to invest in completing the vision. A reefer with out finical limits of vision ends up being a reefer with maxed out credit cards!! Lol this is a hobby that can cause you great finical difficulty. Ok enough of the money stuff on to the fun stuff. You're tittle of your build indicates your both into the hobby which is great and can give you years of enjoyment of not just your tank but also your relationship. I know it has created many great memories for both me and my wife. So do some talking and planning of the finished tank and get back to this thread and let us know the plan and we'll be glad to help you accomplish it!
