How long has the tank been running?

Those are brown diatoms, which generally show up in the first month of so of a tank being setup.

With the use of RO, they should dissappear in about 2 weeks.

this tank has been up for about 1 month, using everything from the old tank. but adding more LS and LR and about 75 gallons of new water to the 55 gallons of old water. this stuff is driving me crazy.

Just as I suspected. Wait about 2 weeks and it will go away. No worries.

I agree with Jeremy. I got them bad when I first started up. If there are no corals in the tank yet you could severly shorten the photo period and that would help ( I THINK???????)
Does water always taste like salt and poo????
