    Default Dual MH ballast?

I am considering running a dual 175W MH setup in my tank.

Do we use pulse start Ballasts? I am trying to pick one up relatively cheap (I can wire and mount it myself), and I am not sure if pulse start will freak the fish out.

Pulse start are commonly used- but need to have compatible bulbs. Some bulbs wont fire on a pulse start ballest- and others are meant for pulse start only- and vice versa.

I would recomend Double ended vs. single ended- and dont skimp on the reflectors if at all possible.

Personally, I like SE bulbs... but to each their own (who ya gonna believe, me or that Sir Patrick dude ). Seriously, I would avoid HQI magnetic ballasts. They pull so much juice from the wall it's crazy.

A lot of places were blowing out 175w magnetic ballasts. Try Premium. Deb had them cheap too, but alas....

I like electronic MH ballasts too (use a bit let electricity), but magnetic models are like indestructible. The ARO electronics get usually be had at a deal somewhere.
Detroit's oldest large LED tank! Est'd Jan 2005, went LED June 2009. 6' wide 130g reef, Sunbrite T10 LED tubes (3xGen 3 and 1xGen 1), mostly SPS, but chalices, other LPS, and a few softies too.

I would go with electronic ballasts..you can fire any bulb. Avoid 175 watt..you get the least choice of bulbs. I would go with 150's or 250 watts. Plenty to choose from in those watts!
