Our 175's on a 20" tall tank are about 8-9" off the water and our 250's on a 22" tall tank are 7" off the water. I think our 250 DE is about 7-8" off the water on a 18" tall tank.

I'd start out a little higher, say around 10-12" then move them down an inch or two every week to acclimate them to the tank until there in the 6-8" range. Kinda all depends on how the spread is on them, may need to adjust from there.

My reading and research has lead me to opt for an addition of a 250 watt 20k AB DE, but it must be driven by an HQI ballast for the ultimate potential.
