Mimicking Nature - Apex LED dimming

I'm confused. How is the photoperiod reduced?

I used to have actinics come on at 6:30 am and go until midnight...so I could see my tank before and after work. By following actual sunrise and sunset times, the tank was getting dark at ~7:20 pm.
