    Unhappy pump for closed loop

I built a closed loop for my 90 gal. reef tank. I used a mag 9 submersible pump but I used it inline. I am not happy with the flow or the noise that my pump is making. I want to move up to a more powerful external pump. I only have softies so I don't need a lot of flow but I think I need at least 1200gph. my question is what pump (size and model) would give me the flow I need and low to no noise I'm looking for? If possible.

If your hearing a real bad rattling noise from the pump it could be cavitating. This is usually do the plumbing going to the intake of the pump not being able to flood the pump with enough water.Sometimes, too much head pressure on the output can do the same thing. For a 1200ish flow rate, you can go the cheaper route with a magnetic/submersible pump.Look for something that's rated at about 1600ish.Ideally,a quality external pump like Iwaki(jap built)thats pressure rated would serve you the best for this type of installation.

I ran a Mag 12 on a CL and it was very quiet. It did make a little noise like davejnz mentioned, but it worked itself out after a few days.

Blueline/Panworld make nice external pumps, and the BL70HD I have is pretty quiet. Might want to check into those.
