oops! again, Yes davejnz, I did misread your post about the freshwater/fresh saltwater.

Chrisl1 - I usualy keep the water level down below the inner tank rim so I could add or loose a gallon.

I think I have a better handle on how the drop in SG came about. I switch salt products and had not paid attention to the mix, this was back when I was changing water more often.

To sum it up I caused the drop in SG by not paying attention.

Davejnz - eeww - I don't think I want to pour the skummy stuff in my hydromiter - let just leave that question a mistery
If you go through a whole day without learning something new, you wasted it.

ur salt level should not be deminishing due to skimming at all top offs may be required with fresh water due to evaperation to keep salt levels down to proper levels but adding fw daily can lead to lowered sg.best kept on track by weekly water changes and regular testing .i also suggest investing in a good refractometer as hydrometers are not as accuarate and can prove to be very misleading with readings.refractometers range in the price of 39-100 dollars but very well worth the enitial cost and much easter to use.1 drop of water is all that is needed to test sg. to answer daves question about sg in skimmed water if you clean the cup daily it could work but if tested with more than a days worth of skimmed water the reading would not be accurate due to water evaperation in the cup itself.but i dont the swing arm will be accurate either due to thicknes and density of the water inhibiting the swing arm from functioning properly
