    Default UV sterilizers

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I am going to buy a UV sterilizer-- any suggestions? I heard higher wattage kills parasites? I think I have parasites in my tank b/c I have recently experienced about 4 unexplained fish deaths in my tank. I saw one that has "ozone" in it? Is that beneficial? I have a 55 gallon reef tank-- Are hang on or in-line better? I currently have a canister filter but I want to switch over to a wet/dry-- will I be able to use my UV sterilizer while changing over to a wet/dry? Will bacteria be able to grow in the wet/dry with a UV sterilizer present? Looking foward to your recommendations--#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

People are divided on the benefits of using UV. I have one on my tank but I only use it when something new is introduced into the tank after it has been in my quarenteen tank. The larger the wattage of UV unit the more water volume you can run through it and still kill parasites. If you get too small of a unit for your water (pump) volume you will kill mostly bacteria that passes through it and not parasites. I prefer the in line type over the hang on but that it only because I like to keep everything out of site and under my tank.
Do you have any corals in your tank? If you do I would stay away from adding a wet dry and go with just building a sump for your tank. If you do decide to use a wet dry and have corals most people recommend removing the bio media that is in most wet drys and replace it with live rock.
Have you noticed anything external on your fish to indicate a parasite?
Do you quarenteen your fish before adding them to your tank?
How about water parameters? Everything check out o.k.?
How long has your tank been set up? I see you listed 2 months experience, perhaps your tank has not FULLY cycled and is not able to handle the bioload.
You should look at your tank water and cycle situation before adding a UV, IMO.
    Happy Reefing!
