how would u do this like so i could hook up one of my surround wires for the speaker connected to the LED to make it strobe? iv hooked it up directly and u have to have it as 20 and its really dim and if u turn it past 30 it will blow out, how would u make it the same brightness all the time and never burn out no matter how much power it gets?
If want it wired to the stereo directly, ideally you should use an unamplified output, and make a circuit to amplify and filter the signal to something that is more friendly to the drivers. Not sure how to do this honestly. The other alternative would be to make a circuit that actually has a small mic and monitors the sound intensity and adjusts the brightness accordingly. That might actually be easier. You might be able to adapt a VU meter circuit to get the job done.
I may have found what you need, and it doesn't look to hard. Give me a little time to test it and draw it up cleanly. I think I know where you are going with this. Are you looking to play storm sounds and have the LEDs react to it? That's the only reason I could think for doing something like this.

you are exactly right!!! yeah i have no idea how i would do this they way i want it, and i dont know alot about puting together circuit stuff so ill need it in dumb terms to understand ha.
I belive the easy way to do this is to use a Color Organ plug it in to the wall for power plug in your stero in the in jacks on the back and plug your lights in to the plug in the front and it will take care of it for you..
Or look for one of the many lighting and storm machines on the internet to make your storm and most come with sound tracks of thunder and rain. Look under Halloween props for some of the better ones that carry a lot of voltage if you need it. I kow LED lights wont need it
Sorry for the delayed response. My brain has been mush from a week long migraine.
rott, that could be made to work, and you have the right idea, but I think a simple circuit could be made to interface with the existing LED setup to get the same effect.
I won't be able to try the circuit this weekend, as I'm out of town for a wedding, but I'll get on it when I get back. Corvette Reefer, the circuit I'm looking at is pretty simple. If it works, I'll have easy to follow diagrams on how to put it together. Shouldn't be too hard.
