    55g x 40 = 2200

But I was planning to install a manifold on my 55g to improve flow so I figure this contrction would probably bring down the 2400 due to friction loss to like 1900 which should be ok right?

Wow you sure have come a long way there, it looks incredible. Your return seems to be an open, I was going more for the closed loop to not have pressure loss at the ends but thanks for the awsome pics looks great.

Um.... and you want to put this in your wet/dry sump?

That is way too much pump for that size tank. That pump is too much pump for most tanks, and adds a ton of heat. Those that use them also use a chiller just to deal with that. So now you have two items sucking up tons of electricity around the clock, plus the expense of the chiller itself.

On my 55g, I used a Mag 9.5 as my return pump and it was too much flow. The overflow couldn't keep up.

If you want a pump for a closed loop with a ton of flow using the manifold system, I would consider the Sequence Dart. It is rated 3600gph at 0 head and uses 160w of power. The Mag 24 uses 265w of power by comparison, and isn't rated to be used externally anyway.

Maybe I'm not reading this right, Is the Mag24 intended for a closed loop or for a return pump?
Every electronic device is manufactured with smoke stored deep inside... only a true genius can find a way to set it free.

Both, a return that returns into a closed loop.

So water goes from sump through pump to manifold ( thats closed ) out to tank.

Gotcha... that explains my confusion.... I agree with Melev, no mater which way I look at it that's WAY overkill. Another example, on our 55g I had a Mag9.5 for the return with the sump 6 feet below the tank (sump was in the basement) and the 9.5 could outrun my 1" overflow with ease.

I've never been known to 'under do' anything, More Power has always been my mantra, but I've learned my share of lessons along the way too.

Just my opinion, the Mag24 is a great pump, but for what it was originally designed for and labeled as.... a pond pump, to be used submerged in a pond to make pretty fountains and stuff, and prevent the pond from freezing... they are pretty bulletproof, but at a cost..... over half of it's power consumption is converted to heat and not towards pumping water.

In an aquarium that would be like leaving a 150w heater on running full bore 24x7.... for the sake of argument lets say anything with less than 300g or 18 square feet of surface area, that heat can't be disappated without having to add more to the system... ie chillers, which starts you in that never ending circle that only spins your electric meter.

Well im currently running the 9.5 in my 55g and It defintely does not feel adequate I added two power heads to it to add additonal flow. How about the MAG 12 or 18 those are a bit inbetween.

Melv I completley missed your post (sorry) Those sequence dart, look incredible. I saw a 2400 model that may fit what Im looking for. Can they be used externally? Also I noticed it says they are adjustable flow? By adjusting their power draw?
