I bought my first LPS (candy cane) about three months ago while I only had 15 watts of 10k and 15 watts of actinic. It took a little longer to get my lighting situation taken care of but now it is in place. When I got the candy cane it would swell up and extend its sweepers but now it does not look so good. Now I have 250 watts of MH at about 4 inches above the water in a 25 inch deep tank with candy cane near the bottom. My question is, will it make a comeback or will I have to live with the fact that I have killed my first coral? It still has color, it just is not as "thick" as it was before. Any advice would be appreciated.
Candy cane corals like moderate lighting and you have moved in the realm of very high lighting....IME I have found that most corals will adapt to lighting if it is done slowly and not just take one set of lights off and move another in its place. Did you start with the light higher than 4" and gradually move them down? You might try moving the candy cane under a ledge where it does not receive any direct light and gradually move it out as it shows signs of growing healthier. Have you changed your water movement? Mine does not like direct water movement on the polyps but rather a placement that receives more indirect water movement as well......Hope this helps in some way
I understand the acclimation process. I was just curious if the candy cane would recover from three months of poor lighting. Sorry If I was unclear before.
