Because your skimmer is making water cleaner, it is likely that light is penetrating more than before. If it is just the top of the colony that is melting, I think it has to do with lighting.
I was thinking the same think. Especially if new bulbs were added all at once. I didn't realize T5s could be s problem if you changed all the bulbs at once. I switched out 6 at once in my first fixture. Caused a lot of problems.
Don't know if you recently changed bulbs or not. Maybe to many changes at once?
