I've never kept that coral, but I've seen such recession even at the LFS. Perhaps your nitrate levels are too high, which some corals can't tolerate.

This is older, but I'm having the same issues. Nitrate is beween 0 and 5, so it's not a nitrate issue in my tank. In fact, since I got it (back in November), I've never seen the crazy sweeper tentacles like I've heard. I've seen some extend only 1/4 inch - if that. I have a nice big 5" x 5" chunk that now has about 1/3 of it dead.

I had the same issue and mine was because of lighting. It was getting shaded by my hammer and I thought it was enough but once I moved it it has come back and the sweepers came back. Also check your Alk and ph also.

Ph is 8.4, do fine and hadn't bought an alk kit due to never having tank issues in 3 years, plus all other inhabitants (including a Derasa clam as well as other LPS corals) are doing fine. However, I have one purchased, just waiting on it to come. I did move it up closer even though it shoudln't have been shaded since there is nothing but that in the near vicinity to shade it. I moved it more in flow to since I figured I would try a few things. I have 2 250w Metal Halide over my 75. I'm hoping with the move - albeit a slight move, it will come back or at the very least stop receding.
