My Sun Corals

Hey all...

I just got some new Sun Corals. Although the pic isn't very good, I thought I'd share. I took the first 2 pics with my cell phone. Tonight was the first night they opened since their dipping ordeal. Took them almost a week to open up.

I feed them mysis normally.. and other stuff. They eat like HOGS! Now the black ones.. since this is the first time they've been opened, I put in some coral frenzy for them. I didn't want them to stress if they overate. LOL

Honestly, I have to be careful about overfeeding that tank. I put them in my contest nano until my other tank is ready. There is no skimmer on the nano. The other is cycling as we speak.

As far as where I got them.. I actually saw them at LFS. I'm lucky they opened. They had been there a couple weeks and had not opened up at all. I took a chance as the only guarantee was only as long as I was in the store.. once I was out the door... they couldn't go back. They weren't cheap either (in my opinion).

Actually Sun Corals are very difficult to keep alive, but an experienced reefer like Becky can meet their needs.

I forgot you don't have a skimmer on your tank......... You might have to remove the tubes a couple times a week and really spot feed them, rock them full of food. Mysis whole and ground. Rod's, Oyster Eggs and there is a new food out by Fauna Marin that is getting a lot of looks. Just got some myself!!

I have never seen a black sun coral before... very cool!

I have a few spots in my tank just perfect for a sun coral, but, to be frank, I am too lazy to feed them daily!

I've had the orange ones for almost a year now. They are extremely healthy... come out during the day to feed. I have them trained to come out during the day. The black ones... they haven't been with me long enough to be trained.

I was so excited to see them open last night. I really thought I may have lost them. Their mouth is super bright green - like a PE. They are actually a dark dark olive green. The skeleton was black before I dipped it. LOL It lost some of it's color, but it looks like it is going back to normal.

What I did with my orange suns is put them in a flowerpot. I have them facing somewhat into the current. This way food gets to them, then kind of swirls and eddies around in the pot so they have plenty to time to reach it. I do sometimes spot feed, but just their positioning alone helps them to get mysis and other foods when I do my normal feedings. I've never taken them out of the tank to feed them. When I do spot feed.. I turn the flow off long enough for them to get food in their tentacles, then right back on. It's a 2 minute process really.

I was told that I wouldn't be able to keep them alive... but shhhhhhh... don't tell them that! They are doing just fine.

I got some better pictures of the black sun corals yesterday. They were actually out during the day / lights on cycle/ I fed them some mysis and coral frenzy.
