I would like to know what size tank it is in now if it outgrew a 240. Maby a new pic to see if there is any more size to it if anyone knows who has it now.
Does water always taste like salt and poo????

Well there are only two clams kept in captivity that can out grow tanks but leaps and bounds. Sorry bobby crocea is not one of them they max out about 6 to7 in. Squamosa gets big upto 18" but looks nothing like that. maxima Largest I have ever heard of was 18" The two that it could be as far as siz would be a:Gigas which has a completly different shell shape than that one or b: Deresa. There you have it folks a 100% answer. How do I know I have had 2 like that about 10" pass though my hands in the pass month. I get alot of clams in. Nice clam though it will keep you tank clean and suck you dry for cal.
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most.

Ummm, Nobody ever said it outgrew any tank. I said that was a pic of it in my friends 240G. That is where it still is. Just hoping for a positive ID. It's easily the size of a football.

Crocea will not get that big...they are one of the smallest in the tridacnid family. It's got to be a derasa..and a purdy one at that.

One thing to keep in mind when making a clam ID is that although the scutes can be a somewhat reliable variable in helping to make an ID, they are not to be considered a 100% tell all sign.

Some clams, if wild harvested, can be completely smoothed out by way of the grinding action as they burrow into rock. You may see no ridges or lines at all! On the other hand, other clams that you would imagine to have subdued scutes (like crocea) yet are farm raised and never truly got to be a "boring clam" may have exaggerated scutes.

Finally, there are clams that have been known to hybridize...I've seen some BEAUTIFUL Squamosa X Derasa that would knock your socks off.

Got to love Knopp's "Giant Clams" book...it's one of my most read, and re-read books. If you own or want to own a clam, you too should own the book

I got mine from clams direct. Well, I bought the book (and a gift certificate) to clams direct for the ole boyfriend for our anniversary. I don't think he has gotten to look at it yet (evil grin). Looks like we won't be adding to our clam collection but replacing. Ours didn't make the move that well and I suspect it is dying. Saxman (the boyfriend) is the bomb when it comes to clams and he has taught me alot.
