PJR, If you can get a 60D, I would get the 60D over the T2i or the T3i. The D series are their professional-grade models, where the T-series are the entry-level photographer cameras. Canon also has an adapter that you can run any lens with. I have a Canon, but have had Nikon in the past, and I am glad I made the switch.
You can get into a 60D for $800 or so, and picking up a standard 18-135 lens would serve you well until you really wanted better (and situational) shots.
Nikon makes a great product. I really had a hard time switching away from my D3000, but over-all, the Canon is treating me well.
I have a Canon, an older model and I like it more than I liked my D3000. My next purchase is a 10mm EF 2.8 USM lens. I want stupid close-up coral shots and that's the lens I'll start with.
