Paint it, and I prefer black by far. Latex holds up just fine.
The high capacity GFO can be regenerated
The Glass Holes 700gph really maxes out at 500gph. When an overflow is maxed out it is noisy. That style of overflow is noisy as it is. Having teeth cut into the overflow also interfers with surface...
Since you are probably not having the tank built, external is almost out of the equation. Coast to coast is an overflow with the entire back of the tank being the weir. Google coast to coast or Calfo...
Hole sizes would depend on how much turnover you are aiming for, placement depends on overflow style. External Coast to coast with a Bean Animal is the way to go. Decide what overflow you want and...
Damn Bro, that really sucks. You had a sweet collection. My tank got wiped out over the winter during a power outage. But setting up the eight footer as we speak. Happens to the best of us. So lets...
I would definately not reuse any substrate nor bother with what is refered to as "live sand" out of a bag. Just replace with new washed substrate. If you have enough live rock I wouldn't save any...
Only the drain lines will have been filled with antifreeze, for the feed lines they just unhook the meter and blow them out.
I was expecting the Vortech backlash. After reading all the nightmare stories of the first Vortechs I am still uncomfortable with them. Not only can I not afford the two mp60s this tank would require...

I am looking for suggestions for the closed loop. I am planning it as a mixed shallow reef...
Sounds like it could be getting too much light. Most chalices are fairly low light corals. They can be acclimated to higher light but will often change to a non desirable color.
I switched to bare bottom two years ago and would never go back. My tank is the cleanest it has ever been and I can throw as much flow at it as I want.

I shoot for 8.4 because that is what AquaVitro recommends.
48x24x12 bare bottom with 30 gallon sump and a close loop.
