Default Bayer Advanced dips. Whos using them and what are you using?

In the past couple years, I have gotten pretty confidant in my ability to grow and sustain SPS in my system. I am getting ready to take the plunge, once more, on a larger level than in the past this year. So far I have been lucky, but am not going to take my chances this time around.

I have been hearing about this Bayer Advanced dip, and even read a lengthy thread on RC about it. Looking to hear what some of the CR peeps have to share on the subject, along with their experiances.

I have so far heard of people using Bayer advanced Complete Insect Killer and also Home Pest + Germ Killer. Both at different parts insecticide per part tank water.

What are you guys using and at what part ratio?

I have also read that this dip is pretty safe for all corals. Wouldnt mind hearing more info on that either.

I am taking the plunge as soon as I hear some experiences and which product to use and some solid info from some of the reefers I have grown to trust.

I got my eye on some nice acros right now........but wont pull the trigger and take a chance yet.

    Chris-

Which product are you considering and why?

I use it every time Chris. I like it better than iodine based products. It seems to be easier on the coral. I have tried weak and strong it doesn't seem to matter. I take pictures after the dip and zoom in to be sure there are no hiding bugs and so far, have not been disappointed. I wish I had tried it back when I had AEFWs. I hear it works on them also but I have no proof.....thank God!!!!!!

I use it at 50ml to a gallon. I have also been lazy and just poured it into the bag leading to a much higher level with no ill effects. I have even dipped some smooth skin acro with it, all be it I reduce the time to 7 minutes from the usual 15 minutes.

I have a good friend who used Bayer to treat for AEFW. It did work and is safe for other coral. It is rumored to last long enough for the egg digestion period to also kill the new born worms. He did not have that experience tho. Down side is it's not safe for your livestock. He actually had fish go blind from this treatment. I personally believe this is a good treatment if you dip then qt the coral for six weeks. I still use revive ,interceptor and a very strong lougels iodine dip with Baster and then QT. I also use a macro lens and take pictures to ensure their is no pest issues. The truth is it really depends who you buy frags from. There is only three people I deal with for sps now.all three of them have extensive experience and QT practices. They are not cheap but their practices make it easier for me. So guess I am saying best prevention is who you get your SPS from. I am not aware of any LFS that can afford to QT or treat SPS like they should which is why the pest issue is what it is. Not raggin on the stores it is just not profitable for them to do it. Todd at cherry corals is one of the few that I do know does dip and qt. I even dip softies, palley's and zoas and QT em now.

I did not treat my system with it when I got AEFW from a LFS purchase in Livonia.I did the revive and iodine daily dip for eight weeks ! For the more seriously infected pieces like the one I bought I used the hefty system. (threw em out)The Bayer advance does work but I suggest keeping it in qt for the safety of live stock. The friend who used it used the Bayer advance also. Not sure of the ratio. But I do know his hippo he had for years was blinded when it swam into one of his huge colony's. it's important to understand in my book that the Bayer is a controlled poison and keeping away from fish in my book is a good safety precaution. One thing I hear from several reefers who get AEFW is it is just this acro ! This a falsehood. If one has them they all have them ! Just as in the case of red and black bugs. Treating then QT'ing them does two things. First treatment is obvious but removing them from the system also allows you to starve the new borne out ! I have read of people dipping all the rocks in Bayer also which seams extreme to me. If you remove the food source they will die off. No matter what method I we're to use I would set up a QT regardless. Good luck Chris and really you know so many people in this community that if your careful of who you buy the sps from you should reduce the chances greatly. Just rember you get what ya pay for. Sometimes the higher price is because of the care and prevention work that went into that frag, which I think is well worth it. No more sps blue light specials for me !!

My new system has yet to show signs of any parasites. I went to great extremes to avoid transferring any issues from the other tanks. I even went to the extreme of using all new base rock in the tank and fuge all coral was dipped weekly and all species we're isolated from each other. I also threw out all sps but three pieces that we're treated and qt'd extensively. I do not know where you heard or we're given the impression that I had AEFW from. I am starting completely over with new frags from only trusted sources that we're good enough to even QT theme for over a month before giving them to me. The only colony I kept was an orange plate that stayed in qt for over eight weeks ! Like I stated above I now only get frags from these people ! If I miss understood your statement I apologize.if I we're to find AEFW in this system I would use the Bayer method in conjunction with iodine baths and keep em in qt tell there was no sign of them after a four to six week period. I find it amazing how common place these issues have become in the last few years. It use to be a six line was all ya needed.

Whoa whoa I never said you had anything. I was interested in the results of treating the system. That would scare me but pesticides scare me in general. That's all.

It's all good ! No problem not looking or trying to cause an issue.like I posted I think it's a viable treatment when the infected or precautionary treated coral is kept in isolation for the safety of the rest of the collection and it's livestock tell it wears off. If for some reason I found something in a store that I could just not live without. I would probably stop at HD and use it for my first option then do weekly iodine treatment too
