Having to drive that distance to replace the overflow really sucks rocks, I'd stick a powerhead down the refuge to keep the water moving a bit.

Look on the bright side (you did get your lighting so the pun fits), maybe you are just getting lucky and having the bad luck up front and you won't have any later when you get ready to start adding critters.
