    Lightbulb Nanotuners Thomas Research Products

    Hi Evil,

Had some questions regarding the Thomas research drivers that were added to your store. I have a 5'x2'x2' tank and im planning out my LED build for it. I plan on getting 48 XP-G Neutral Whites, 48 XP-E Blue, and 48 XP-E Royal Blue. I intend on doing 3 pendants of 48 LEDS (16 of each color).

I was checking out the specs on the Thomas research 200W TRC-200 Dimmable Series and was thinking this will be the way to go. 700mA has a max output of 143-285 VDC and 1050mA has a max output of 95-190 VDC. XP-G are rated to be 3.3v at 1050mA and XP-E are rated at about 3.4 at 700mA. Correct me if my math is wrong but I belive that means that 48 XP-G would be 3.3*48=158.4 which is well within the range at 1050mA and XP-E would be 3.4*48=163.2 which also will be in range for 700mA. Is that correct?

Second question is are these Thomas Research similar to the Meanwell drivers in which they do not need a seperate power supply?

Final question is I was also checking out the new Nanocustoms Duo led driver enclosure (I'm impressed!) and wondering if you will be putting the 200W Thomas research drivers in those at all?

You must have transposed the voltages off another driver, but the 200W driver at 700mA has a voltage range of 171-285v, which would put your XP-E array under the minimum voltage. The 120W 700mA driver (103-171v) would be more than enough, and it will save you some money. These drivers are typically about $1 per watt.

TRP drivers do not require any external voltage source to make dimming work. All you need is a 20K linear taper pot wired up to the wires provided on the driver. Done. These drivers are much easier to use and set up than any of the Meanwell drivers.

I don't think we will be offering a driver box for the really large drivers, but who knows. Stranger things have been known to happen.

These drivers sound sexy! No external voltage for dim and can power a ridiculous amount of led's. Oh I did not notice on the spec sheet it says TRC-200S070DT next to the 700mA part. Is it possible to fit one of the larger drivers in one of your boxes? Maybe I'll give the shop a call and see what they say?

What would be your recommended LED limit on the 150w and 200w TRP drivers?

those large driver sound like they can take the place of many meanwells. Is that the case Evilc

Depends on the LEDs. Newer generation LEDs have lower forward voltages, so they can drive more LEDs.

New driver boxes will be coming for the larger drivers. We can always get something custom made ahead of time, but waiting for us to finish production versions will save you a lot of cash. Giving the shop a call never hurts.

Yup. And everything is driven in series. You do have to be more cautious around the higher voltages, but the same can be said for any driver. My last high power fixture that I built was using 4 Bridgelux 1203 neutral whites (18W each), and 32 XR-E royals, driven off just two 120W drivers. That's almost 200W of LEDs.

I would love to run 96 leds off these. XRE's.

The trim pot makes it so easy it seems. When can we expect to see these ready to ship?

We have some in stock, but I'm pretty sure we don't have the 120W drivers in stock. We will be focusin mainly on the 40W, 75W, and 120W units, but we can get anything they offer. It may just take a little more time to ship.
