FWIW, I've read that pretty much all fish have ich, but it only acts up in stressed fish, and tangs are notorious for getting stressed. Makes sense to me.

makes sense to me too, now if i could just relax him a little bit !! he is coming sround the front of the tank more than he was. my hand on the glass doesn't even scare him anymore. maybe he is relaxing.
Play some classical music. as crazy as it sounds the vibrations might get to him and sooth his little mind.
Does water always taste like salt and poo????
it's actually that ich is present in many systems, particularly on the wholesaler/LFS level, not that the fish have it since ich is an ectoparasite.
tangs are prone to ich due to their scale structure and lack of a thick slime coat. yes, stress can be a trigger, but the fish don't come with built-in ich.
that's more what i meant, not that it's present in all fish, just that the odds of you buying a fish with ich already are relatively high.
