OK, I have a ~10 year old yellow watchman paired with a tiger pistol shrimp. Would there be a conflict if I added small gobies of the aforementioned type?

By small you mean the non-shrimp small gobies....eg. green-banded, red head, etc.? I don't think that would be an issue...but no real experience with larger gobies.

On the new tank I am setting up, I plan to have at least four pearl headed jawfish. I'd like to figure out a way to keep the barebottom tank and keep them though.

Yes, those are the type I'm talking about. My main concerns with these have been short lifespan (Jim thanks for answering that earlier in this thread), becoming pistol shrimp snacks, and will they hide so much I never see them. Can anyone help answer the other two?

I am thinking about making the just the back of the tank bare-bottom.

I lost two of the tiger stripped gobies (the ones that are whitish with black stipes) but they were around for 18 months to two years old when I noticed they were gone.

Jim - not sure if 1/2 BB is possible (without a lot of maintenance) . I think the sand would eventually migrate throughout the tank. Also, I don't know much about jawfish but I thought they need a relatively deep sand bed.

Jim - I'm usually willing to push the envelope of what I can do/keep in my tanks - and I've also bent the rules as to tank sizes (I ran a quart pico for a month with an air lift pump setup for water movement and an LED light)

but I'm a bit nervous about trying jawfish - no matter how cool I think they are to watch pop out of their dens
